Well first of all congratulations to all of you on this wonderful site. I awoke yesterday with a memory of a wonderful audio system my dad had when I was younger, so went straight to my moms house and found it in the loft. It is a wonderful BeoSystem 5500, which I hope to use in my new home. I have discovered...

Martin, Your advice was absolutely spot on, as always! Everything works fine again after re-soldering all edge connectors, all pushbuttons respond as they should. Curiously I noticed that one of the several tiny capacitors soldered onto pins at the left hand side connector of the processor board had...

Whenever a record is playing it stops after a while; the arm is lifted and turned to the starting position after that the beocenter goes to standby. The time between the starting and...

Well, I have some good news and some good news on the sparking (and capacitor) front(s). I finally solved the sparking issue. When I first retrieved the 1600, the aluminium cover panel (the brushed plate surrounding the tape turntables) had the two brass locating pins pulled out of their retaining holes...

Thanks casdave, that's exactly what's happened. The tants (especially on the preamp boards) have long since turned into, er, dynamic resistors. I changed the two in the preamps, and the hum and crosstalk disappeared from the preamps. I've just got around to getting a big bag of good quality...
