Beocord 8002, check (or simply replace) the record/playback relay near the tapehead cable socket.
If it has a dolby switching relay too, replace that one as well.

Finally got around to opening up my very first piece of Beocrack that I won at auction a few years back. It has never been a problem, so for sentimental reasons I had always just left it alone.

and found a little surprise inside

I guess I opened her up for the refurb in the nick of time. Probably wasnt going to work a whole lot longer heating up like that.

This here refurb has been brought to you by Fujicon !!! Maker of low cost, high temp, low ESR general purpose radial capacitors.

Re: What Are You Working On Now ?

Sorted out 3 Beomaster 6000's over last 4 weeks and the last one was great until the last check, when an led segment seemed to have dissapeared!

Knew it was not drys as I had checked and sorted these, so the next most likely culprit was the display :(

So, stripped it down and then decided to take some pics as I went along!

Pretty small you can see the led's are mounted directly to the board, common anode. The 'whisker' seems to be intact here so I place my meter probe directly on the chip itself and it certainly was dead.

Prepared the surface as abiove then tinned ready to accept an SMD LED....

Soldered the new chip in place. At this point I am worried about it being too bright, compared to its 30 year old cousins, and sure enough, it was!!!

A little masking helped here, better than messing with resistors!

    Quite happy with the result!

    Olly.

Idea A 'eureka !' moment for me. Thanks Olly and good work.

Fugicon caps explode when mounted backwards. Made a hell of a mess inside and didint find  the casing until Sunday. It was blown straight up and must have ricochetted off the cieling and into the closet behind the work table.

amazingly the Beomaster never lost power and was actually still playing music when it happen about a minute into low volume sound tests. Knew something wasnt right cause the set was emitting a foul oder when I was powering up for function test with no load on the system.

Replaced the cap, correctly this time and the 3000 plays just fine.

At least they're small, unlike these:

I used solen to recap a set of RL60's. Barely fit. i was concerned I would not be able to get the back speaker housing to mount back on they took up so much space.

Here is a cross I did last summer for a set of S-80.2. Again barely fits the board with clearance becoming a big concern. But it did fit. Barely.

Ta, not sure if the wife would agree with the above replacing pics of the kids though Laughing I guess I could go back and take some more arty versions and pop them up a bit - the displays with guides, but without filter looked quite amazing with a twinkle effect but I could not capture that on camera... For quick pics which required lots of Dof like this my Nikon 8700 ruled and I do miss it, despite having an SLR! It was a very nice but a challanging and awkward camera!

Re: What Are You Working On Now ?

    I've got a BeoMaster 2400 open here, with a bad Balance slide-potentiometer.

I usually disassemble and rebuild these, but this one is beyond repair.

The Treble and Bass pots are NOT suitable substuitutes - completely different taper, as well as the wrong resistance.

Does anyone have a spare one? - it could be from a BM1900 also.

Just a tip, you can also use the potentiometer of a BeoMaster 2200/BeoCenter 3300/4000!

Finished the 2nd plate for RL 140s, it was a back to basics work where I had to remember what I learned as a pupil back in 1968-72, cutting, marking, bending, filing to exact measure, checking all angles and drill all holes. All done with the help of a good bench vise, colum drill, hack saw, files, hammer and some cubas. I enjoyed it, today mecanics only change spareparts and forget the art of working with head and hands.

As I run out of black paint, I stripped the black one and gave both a primer, so Martin will have to spray in the color he prefere.
