Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Jaques I have sh!t loads of meccano - I will have a look to see if there are any suitable pulleys. I think they would need drilling and modding but that shouldn't be problem. I suspect they will either be a little too big or small from memory but worth looking!
I also have my grandfathers ML7 lathe in the garage but haven't a clue how to use the thing - maybe it is time I learn't hey!?
Bit busy with daughters birthday and party atm but I promise I won't forget!
If the shafts are of similar diameter can you take it off your 4002?

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Yes, following Martin's idea of the Logo pulley I too had the idea of Meccano. I am not taking the pulley off my 4002, no way!
Anyway, the shaft is of smaller diametre in the 4002 and of course I won't re-drill it!
Martin tells me the outer diametre of the pulley isn't that critical provided the belt fits.
Okay. I'll try that out and report back next week, unless someone (Olly then?) manages to find a suitable Meccano pulley with a screw, which the Lego one doesn't have of course (it has to be glued in place).

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Perhaps it is resting down inside, under a board... waiting to be discovered?
If everything about the 4002/4 pulley is the same except the ID... I *think* I have one to spare -if you need it!

If you dont find a spare or can get one made, send me dimensions and drawing, I'll make you one for free, but I'm in Mexico and you should be able to find a machine shop where you are, to make a new one.

Unfortunately no, it's nowhere inside...
But if you are kind enough to give one to me I'll definitely snap it
mate! I suppose I can alter the inner diametre...
I had a collision w/ a bottle of Dewar's 12 last night or I would have responded sooner...
I didn't realize you already took delivery -how is it otherwise? I will have a look this evening and let you know what I find!

OK...
Jacques,
I have pulled the pulley out of my spare. I also took the opportunity to pull the same from a 4000.
Dimensionally... the OD appears identical as well as the thickness. The difference appears to be a re-design of the flanges along the v-groove to strengthen them, as well as a new material. I don't see this causing any issues -the later design is much more robust! Where we will have an issue is with the ID. The 4002/4 shaft is actually a larger OD than the 4000, so the thru hole on my spare pulley will actually be oversized! Furthermore, the shaft on the 4000 is machined into a half-moon key. The 4002/4 shaft is not. So, you will need to come up with some way of sleeving the 4000 shaft. Perhaps a small piece of aluminum or similar to take up the gap that will exist. The key to me would be ensuring that the pulley was simply centered on the shaft. We are not dealing w/ high speed nor high torque here, so I wouldn't overthink it too much.
If you want the spare, I can mail it out to you -are you still at the same Burgundy address that I have shipped to before?
Let me know ...and let me know if you need any more info before deciding.
Happy Holidays,

Right then. Pulley issue solved. Thanks Jeff!
I will have some time during the Christmas holidays and be sure I will report back, with some pictures of course!
So happy holidays to everyone... one more (busy) week to go.

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Hello,
I have had some time to look into the Beogram.
What works so far:
The command panel,
The strobe.
Er... That's it!
What doesn't:
Both motors are very noisy,
The arm lift is completely stuck, that was expected,
The detector bulb is out, Martin are you there?
The strobe markings are scratched,
I still miss the worm screw pulley!
The alu tube of the detector arm is marked. It looks ugly.

chartz:

Fixed.
Also tested: 33 and 45 speeds, stable. Oh, and the illuminated adjusters! I wasn't expecting that!
chartz:
Both motors are very noisy...
Fixed the main motor, quite easy to lubricate actually, nothing to dismantle since the lower bearing is visible underneath!
The main bearing is tight, it has to be forced down into the pit! Reminds me of my Thorens!
Working on the lid right now. Yes, yes, I'm on holiday!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
The build quality on these are fantastic - the bearing is huge and over-engineered. Compare it with the later 4002 and see the difference! Sounds like this one is destined to be beautiful so please take lots of pictures!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
The strobe is scratched and marked on mine too Jacques, in fact there is a huge burn mark under my platter where the solenoid volt-drop resistor had previously exploded I am convinced the only way this could have happened is with clumbsy hands (i.e. someone shorting the solenoid) as there is no natural explanation as far as I can see!!!!
I tried photocopying the platter but my machine distorts the image too much. I thought about taking to a printers, getting a decent copy on to cd then retouching and reprinting. Not got round to this yet.
Anyway, the detector arm should be easy to remove and clean up. The detector slides out completely unlike later decks so it is easier to deal with - you can easily remove the socket too and when I did this on my deck I found the following....
Notice the loose connector strip!
I would double check and make sure the bulb really has gone before trying your replacement. Of course it won't harm to replace anyway!
I assume the pulley is in the post from the other member?

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Hi,
Well actually it isn't that bad, I will use humbrol paint to repair the scratched zone.
Yes the bulb has gone. I've asked Martin for the part... I'm sure he has it!
And yes the pulley's on its way from the US!
Thanks for the detector arm tip!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
I've just finished the alu covers. I removed the transport damage (metallic parts rubbing against one another) with a product called "Argentil" normally used to remove silver oxidation. It came out perfect!
For the lid, Brasso and a French product called "Restom PAP 5000" (actually this is produced next to my place, but they have a website.
I haven't finished it yet, but it's soooo slow!
I still have to remove the old rubber lid dampers (I have new ones from B&O, still available).
That's all for today. I am waiting for the bulb and the pulley to align the arm.
Of course, the pictures will follow in some time!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Hello,
Step1:
I am intrigued - what rubber damper are you referrng to?
Sorry, I meant rubber stops!
The arm moves... The pulley (thanks Jeff!) doesn't have a perfect rotation but I haven't said my last word. What you see is a rolled sheet of plastic...
Right and left movement work but if I can get a slow or fast movement to the right, I don't have both to the left, only slow motion works. Any ideas?
Can anyone please confirm that the arm lift won't work at all without the detector bulb?

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
A few pictures... I've found aluminium bushings of the correct diametre, but I had to re-drill the pulley to increase the inner diametre a bit. I use a bit of plastic I shaped to form as a half-moon key (I can't machine metal).
Works well!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
I am always shocked how fast things can arrive overseas!
Glad to hear that it was worth the effort and that it works!
Happy Holidays from your US odd-parts-bin supplier.

You wouldn't happen to have any "before & after" pics of this treatment? I have similar "markings" on a transport or two and was wondering if my damage was similar enough ...this might work for me too!

Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?
Thanks!
Yes, my markings are very similar, perhaps not as bad. I
left them alone as I did not want to make them worse. Where I have the
biggest issue is on the rectangular shroud that has more texture to it.
It appears that this worked on that too? Based on your success -I will
have a try on my parts machine.

Yes indeed!
Now I don't know the American equivalent to Argentil. It is not a silver cream, it is a liquid solution made by Henkel.
