Flash is indeed a problem, but there will be an app for that !!! ....
I think HTML5 will kill Flash in the long run.

The Ipad is, first of all, NOT really meant to replace any 'business' computer. However I can see it work very well in a sales environment for example.

I don't think the internal memory is that much of a problem, the wifi will serve whatever it is you want from your home network.
It's only when you take it outside of the home that the memory issue is important.

When I am home on the weekend, I am not particular interested in going to my home office , switch on the computer in order to check my emails etc., or use the inconvenient cell phone. I hate using that thing for anything else than calling.  I want to get home, switch off my workphone and be able to check my emails, read my paper, listen to some tunes etc right from my lazy coach, when I feel like it.. (or just typing a quick reply on Beoworld???)

I think it's a solid idea that has plenty of potential (more than we can think of right now as we are not limited to a small screen and slow processors) and just like the first iphone it will grow out of its baby clothes and find it's proper use over time.

    Time will tell.

I think the reason Steve Jobs pushed the iWorks team was so that developers would think outside the iPhone box.

The message is: you can "tweak" Mac applications to run on this device.

[of course we don't know how big a "tweak" it was ... just the UI? or more fundamental than that? partially of course that depends on how well architect the application is]

Iworks was rewritten from scratch as mac osx is not compatible with the Iphone OS.
I think it was indeed Jobs way to make sure you get to look at the tablet beyond the Iphone barrier and its fairly limiting apps.

Also shows that the Ipad is capable of doing alot more than the Iphone and is considerably faster.

I would love to see iweb run on it as well.

When you run Flash on your computer, you are downloading and activating code together with the content. This code then runs on your computer.

Vimeo doesn't download code, and software that is legitimate and already installed doesn't have to download code. Apple doesn't want Flash in mobile devices for security reasons. (And people who surf specific types of porn are sometimes surprised to find e-mail dealing with that particular kind of porn in their inboxes ... Big Smile)

I doubt you'll get flash on Apple's mobile devices, and because they are so popular, many sites are changing to safer playback formats where code isn't transferred.

    Guys,

I'm an apple follower as long as I'd prefer mn's suggestion but this is on and off a toy that nobody need!

If they all (manufacturer) would ask for input in their customer requirement specifications / product requirement specifications, we would have great products on market and probably we would only discuss over all the world and his brother !

    Could also be boring ......

Remember the iPhone OS is in reality a version of OS X and much of the code is the same.

Following up on some other points...   the 64Gb capacity is surely to leave room for a capacity bump for the second version (which might or might not also have some additional features). This approach worked well for Apple with the iPods and iPhones!

Flash certainly is still around, and used on a huge number of websites. But then floppy drives were ubiquitous at one point, AltaVista used to be the dominant search engine...  things change, and Flash belongs to the past not the future.

And finally... isn't this a B&O forum?? Smile

It is, but some of us are still looking for ways to play digital content on our Beolabs and Beovisions and Apple is the next thing next to B&O for that.

For sure it is fun to use and I would prefer it at home when on the couch over a notebook.

I am just really disappointed that they didn't nail music, video and for that matter photos at home better when in this scenario.  They treat it like on an Ipod which is for on the go but this is not for on the go, this device is clearly for the couch.

    Exactly.

Mozilla announced Wednesday that they have dropped flash support in their latest mobile release candidate...

The lack of flash support seems to be the upcoming trend.

Yes it is a B&O forum.  Can the forthcoming B&O iPod dock be used for the iPad?  Will there be any iPod/iPad applications developed by B&O?  If not they had better get busy.

I plan on getting the iPad for use in my condo and will probably use it in a comfortable chair like the Steve Jobs demo.  It will most likely be the wifi version.  My dilemma is my wife wants one also and her justification is more reasonable than mine.  She works in the publishing industry and she said it is a must have product.  She will get the 3G/wifi version.  My Beovision 10 purchase will have to be on hold for about 6 months.

Many things were not covered in the demonstration by Steve Jobs and others but just as the iPhone and iPod  had shortcomings at the beginning, they were soon corrected.  These devices have had impressive sales.  Apple is now a $50 billion a year company which is not to be ignored.

I agree with remarks about HTML5.  YouTube is currently has a beta test for delivery of video by HTML5.  Web developers are not very aware of HTML5 but ultimately it could replace flash.  I hope so.

Note that the NY Times website on the IPAD Apple.com website would not show the pictures as that is a flash gallery.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/travel/10places.html?em

What people saw in Jobs demo which I thought was a glitch from him picking that page will be damm difficult to avoid.

That they obviously photoshopped their page at http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/ , but this is to a point where it's lying -they should be forced to clarify that the Ipad can't show the page as they are depicting it.

Here is an interesting article which looks at the iPad from a more broader and sober market perspective...

Anyway, I like their illustration :-)

What exactly didn't they nail?  What exactly should it have been?  16:9?  That'll make book reading a lot of fun.  And how should they do that, narrower or wider?  One makes it rather large and the other one makes it smaller, both of which would also have people complaining.

It's for on the couch.  It's for on the train.  It's for on a flight.  It's for reading by the pool.  It's an e-reader that happens to do a boat load of other cool stuff.

I don't understand why it is that every time Apple releases a product it's accompanied by the vitriol of haters who want it to be more like a PC (must have USB! must have an optical drive! must use flash! must be .mkv compatible!) and have never seen or used said device before.  Not that the praises and rainbows and puppies of the Cult of Mac people are much better but gushing is better than vitriol any day.

Remember when the first iMac came out and people freaked because it only had USB ports?  Remember when the iPhone came out and everyone freaked because it didn't do flash?  Remember when the MacBook Air came out and it didn't have an optical drive?  Remember when iTunes came out and everyone freaked because the DRM required you to use an iPod?  These products all did quite well.  Like them or not, when Apple makes a huge play to change the way an existing technology is used, they typically succeed.

I will personally be quite happy if/when Flash will be superceded by HTML5 for embedded media, but what worries me is the real reason behind Apple rejecting Flash. It is not the processing power or whatever the excuse - it is because Flash support allows you to easily run independent software. Apple doesn't want that, it wants to control the apps and their distribution to be able to dictate how the services and devices are used and how the money flows around them. Ultimately this could lead to worse monopolization than Microsoft ever achieved, with the difference that Apple fans all think it is great Stick out tongue

True dat.  Time will tell on this one.  Protecting the iPhone from malice?  Or making money.  Don't forget that as long as there aren't viruses on Apple products there are people that will switch because they've gotten one virus too many.  So even the friendliest reason will make them money.

It is the full strategic intent of Apple to kill Flash by not enabling it on iPhone, iPod, nor iPad.

If/until Apple is defeated in this area, expect no Flash support whatsoever, neither from Apple nor from a third party on the Apple Store.

Defeated?  That would be the best thing to happen to web pages in a long time.  Get rid of all this random junk on websites and get standardized and more efficient.  Flash and Windows Media on web pages needs to go the same route as Real Player and Shockwave.  As in: gone.

And to say that mayor websites remove flash, show me that trend.

Sure thing, no problem.  Remember the desperate Adobe Flash guy who put 10 websites supposedly not accessible from iPhone/iPod/iPad?

Turns out 8 of these have already developed special no Flash versions exclusively for iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Want to take bets on how long before they tire of keeping parallel website technologies and drop the one that's incompatible with iPhone/iPod/iPad?  The point, and especially painfully with regard to the desperate Adobe Flash guy, is made here.
