Privat survey of Beolab 5000 - Beomaster 5000 producs

I am trying to find out the production qty of the classic Beolab 5000 type 5303 and the Beomaster 5000 type 2005 of 1967-72. This is possible by knowing / identifying the serial number and the series of the products.

I hope you owners of these wonderful products will help by sending me the informations of your products

Please look at the label of your product and send me:

    • Product: [Beolab 5000 or Beomaster 5000]
    • Serial number [5 digit]
    • Serie [2 digit]

It looks like this on your product and I need the information like

    • Beolab 5000
    • Serial no: 46901
    • Serie: 06

I do hope to recieve a lot of product info and I will afterwards show the result here of course. At this moment I have the identity of some 70 pairs of BL/BM 5000.

    /Frede

Here you see a typical label:

Beolab 5000 -  "If another amplifier sounds different then it needs repair!"

Re: Privat survey of Beolab 5000 - Beomaster 5000 producs

I too have collected serial numbers and other info for many years.
It's very hard to tell the number of items of a certain type produced by
looking only at the serial numbers, simply because the serial numbers are
seemingly not given as a continous range to a specific model but rather
in the order they are produced or planned, - that is across different
models that were built at (or nearly at) the same time.
Starting with serial number 1 in the 1920's, reaching apprx serial number 1500
in early 1930, 10000 items reached in 1937 and so on.
When close to one million items were produced, it seems the serial number counter
was reset starting again from 10000 in late 1964 (supposingly when transistor
    models got introduced).
As no reliable info regarding this was (to my knowledge) ever released, it will have to
    remain a guess though.

    F.e. Beolab 5000 (5303)
Serial numbers 57648 & 79322 are both Beolab 5000 but
    72338 is a Beomaster 700K and 78660 is a Beomaster 3000

From recent repairs, I can add:

    Beolab 5000 type 5303 serie 02 66355 (Teak)
    Beolab 5000 type 5303 serie 10 57527 (Palisander)
    Beolab 5000 type 5303 serie 10 57648 (oak)
    Beomaster 5000 type 2005 serie 9 12002 (Palisander)
    Beomaster 5000 type 2005 serie 3 62432 (teak)

I have several pairs in my own collection, I will be happy to give you
the numbers when I get around to unpack them from storage.

Re: Privat survey of Beolab 5000 - Beomaster 5000 producs

Looking a bit closer at this together with Frede, it could be that
serial numbers are a continuos range within each production run (serie).
Still, it's strange that serial numbers from serie 9 are considerably lower than
    those of serie 3...

    Mine are

    • Beomaster s/n 16543 serie 01
    • Beolab s/n 66224 serie 02

...not from the same place, but both are teak (I guess - how do you tell between teak / palisander / rosewood anyway?).

Re: Privat survey of Beolab 5000 - Beomaster 5000 producs

    Hi Dario,

Congratulation with your new classsic Beolab 5000. I do hope you will enjoy very much the sound quality of this fantastic amplifier.

    Your question,

The LINE output on Bea constant level of 350 mV output. This signal / line  output is 'before' the volume control. If you connect this to an active speaker you will listen to an un-regulated sound level. In other words you cannot control the sound level with the Beolab volume control.

This is the same for the output signal of the tape connection of Beolab 5000.

I am sorry but you really needs passive speakers for your Beolab and of course the best  solution is Beovox 5000 / Beovox 2500 Cube or Beovox 3000 / Beovox 2500 Cube.

    hi frede,

thanks for your advice. i'm looking for beovox 2500 cube with beovox 3000, because i don't have space for big speakers. i really like the design of the beovox 2500 cube. is it possible to build a bass speaker principle the same as the bose cube system? the setup will be 2 beovox 2500 cube and 1 bass speaker.

    regards dario

    Hi Dario,

That is not possible, because of the frequency response of the Cube's

You will not get the propper stereo sound picture / soundstage by a system of the Cube and a subwoofer.

    Frede,

I would be interested in hearing your opinion on the best passives (only interested in using B&o) for the 5000 system (beyond the typical 3000/5000/2500 cube setup), as I currently have none of them.

I do, however, have access to plenty of other era and later passives. I was initially considering some later S60's. Would love to hear what you, or anyone else for that matter, thinks!

    Thanks! Smile

I have used all sorts of speakers with mine - the best are really the ones designed to go with the system as long as they are in good condition. However that said, I actually continue to use BBCLS3/5A speakers with mine along with AB1 subwoofers (not really sub woofers at all but add a couple of octaves to the LS3/5As!!) and these are my favourites.

For B&O speakers, I have used quite a few Uniphase speakers - I like the S45-2 and even M100s with the 5000 but you might find the music a bit more exciting than normal - quite attractive but different from using say a Beomaster 4400. Slight lift to the top end is what it sounds like though the frequency response measured is very flat. B&O designed systems back then and the best response always comes from the original set up. S60s are quite bright anyway so might be a little harsh. You can of course alter the sound with the tone controls which are very well designed on the Beolab 5000.

    welcome to the club... ;-)

did you find some beovox 2500/3000/5000?

i found some beovox 2400 very cheap as a interim solution. i know it's not the perfect match. yesterday i connect the speakers to my beolab 5000. the sound quality is amazing, even with this speakers. warm, detailed, stereoscopic... simple, they play music!!! with the beogram 4002 and mmc cl the vinyl comes really fine. also my mp3 on itunes, connect with the airport express, sounds really good. unbelievable from a over 40 years old unrestored system.

at the end of the month, i'll pick up my beovox 2500 cubes. the beovox 2400 have also the socket to connect them.

next step is to restore my beolab 5000 by frede.

Not yet, they seem to fall under the category of plentiful when you don't need them, and nowhere to be found when you do! Laughing

I too have tried out a few speakers as I experiment and find my way around the BL and BM. I can say unequivocally: the combo is simply the finest thing I have ever heard. My jaw continuously dropped. It has a delicacy paired with strength that I can not recall experiencing before!

Well, I wish I lived closer, the weight would be prohibitive for shipping. Fortunately, so far I have only noted minor issues that I will start sorting when I have time. The only potentially major issue seems to be a slight bit of L/R imbalance... R seems a tad weak.

I may go ahead and initiate a new thread regarding my pieces and the progress I make.

First, in response to Frede: It is w/ great pleasure that I can add to your records!

I have absolutely fallen in love w/ my BL-BM system... it is beyond description!

    To my previous post...

    burantek:
The only potentially major issue seems to be a slight bit of L/R imbalance... R seems a tad weak.

What a system! I am either a DOLT or entirely too lackadaisical about my listening habits...

I have solved the imbalance problem and it was blisteringly more painful than you could ever imagine!!!

The problem was not the 5000, it was MY HEAD!

In a snap response to my wonderful wife while playing w/ it, my head turned and... viola! the treble dropped out!

    EPIPHANY!

I changed sources and snapped my head 180 degrees back and forth... and there it was... I simply can't pick up treble in my right ear!

Living in the USA and having driven "loud" LHD vehicles... I have apparently lost my right ear functionality! I NEVER realized this until the brilliance of a 40+ year old audio system stepped up and literally slapped me in the face!

I will have this system until I die! ...and then I must choose which child gets it!... maybe I need another! No question about it! [system, that is... not child, thank you very much] Erm Laughing
