Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Is AST part of the 8.0x update for the BV 7 and BeoSystem 3?

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Interesting, i have just set up AST in my system, just adding left and right side of my couch and therefore rotating the soundpicture a bit depending on which side i sit in. Seems to work allright, but here is an idear for B&O to follow up on. Why not when AST is activated, does the soundpicture rotate with the stand position?. Imagine sitting in your couch watching a movie, and then after a while rotate your tv towards your favorite chair AND having the sound rotate simultaneously without having to preset a setting named "Chair" in the AST menu...

Double Razlaw - great idea! B&O do it quick before Loewe get a hang of this. Since motorized screens are still very much a rarity in the A/V world, this wouldn't be copied easily (like MOTS) and could become a new B&O "killer feature".

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
That's about $580 US. I was hoping it would just be a memory update for the Mark I BS3s. So, anyone know the technical differences between the BS3 Mark I and Mark II besides more memory? Does it have a faster processor, etc?

Well, not yet, but you will be able to do that: using the Beo5, the sound goes "direct" to the Beo5 position. I don't know how it works (and don't really care), but it will be avalible in the next sw upgrade for de Beo 5.

Forgive me if I'm completely wong but this AST system sounds like it performs similar to the current stereo bose systems (the computer/desktop systems that "throw" the sound in way that it sounds like surround). The first part of that flatpanelshd article reminded me of these bose systems.
Hi, I'm the guy at B&O in Struer behind AST. I can guarantee that AST is not the same as a typical upmix algorithm (like ProLogicII, for example...), so-called "soundbars", or loudspeakers that rely on wall reflections to widen the sound stage. The idea behind it is that we use loudspeakers you have, wherever you put them (within reason...) to simulate a "perfect" loudspeaker configuration outside your room.
As KingStreet mentioned above, however, if you don't have a problem (with your loudspeaker configuration) you don't need the solution... However, for a correct loudspeaker setup, you still might get an improvement by using AST if you're sitting in the wrong position or facing the wrong direction. This is why you have the option to enable or disable AST in individual presets.
I'll keep an eye on this forum just in case I can help answer other issues or questions about AST.
Cheers

What an authority!
I am glad to hear it is a system unique to Bang & Olufsen, and not an upmix as you say. I am also very glad to hear that it is not a gimmick like those that I mentioned previously. It seems that is how Bose gathers its customers, through "look what I can do" demonstrations. Good to know it is a solution to a problem, not a gadget.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Hi Evan,
I like to think of AST as something similar to ABC in the BeoLab5. Where ABC corrects for timbral problems caused by a bad room or the fact that you stuck your speaker in a corner of the room, AST corrects for spatial problems cause by the fact that you aren't sitting exactly in the sweet spot.
If you have a perfect room and you haven't stuck your BL5 against a wall, then you might not need ABC. If you have a good loudspeaker placement and a chair in the sweet spot, then you don't need AST. If it's not slippery and you know how to use your brakes, then your car doesn't need anti-lock brakes... However, there are customers and applications where all three are useful... :-)
cheers

Thanks for the list.
I have a BV7-40 mk. IV type 9440, but local B&O service center told my that I need the hardware update. Is that true? I am confused, and must say that I tend to believe more in what I read here than what I am told in stores or by a repair man.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
I am no expert, but based on what I have read, and what my dealer told me when I was considering adding AST to our MKIII, your TV, being a MKIV should only need a software update.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Thanks. I a just wondering, that my TV being one of the first mkIVs to leave the factory, has been shipped without the new sound board.
I will try to have another talk with my dealer in the coming week.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
I am about to upgrade my BV9/BS3 with the new Digital Surround Module and latest s/w build. Can anybody answer if the attached loadspeakers to the BS3 can simply be "daisy chained" in a single "loop" from the BS3 or if they need to be at least Right and Left seperated in two "loops".
Hope that the question is understandable.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Here in the US only two can be daisy chained, just as you say, front left and right, rear left and right, surround left and right.

Hi Geoff,
Is there value in AST if you have a simple BV7-40 and BL7.2 set up?
Thanks for your advice.

Re: AST - Adaptive Sound Technology
Hope you do not not mind somebody else giving you an answer. Obviously the best answer would be from Geoff, but the instruction guide for AST on the B and O web page mentions that it should not be used if there are only a "few" speakers.

Hi Stephen,
If you have only the BL7.2 and no other loudspeakers, then you will not be able to turn AST on. AST requires that you have at least 3 loudspeakers connected in order to enable it (it will be greyed out in the menus with fewer than 3 loudspeakers). Also, I would say that it's probably not worth turning on without at least 4 loudspeakers - more is always better ;-)
To be clear, a BL7.2 is considered by AST to be 2 loudspeakers. The exception to this statement happens if you have 6 other loudspeakers enabled in an AST setup, then the BL7.2 gets a one-channel feed from the AST algorithm.
Hope this helps
Cheers
