However, I have since built a ring light for purposes like this.

Something I have not used, yet (very creative on your part). I usually spot the subject w/ a desk lamp and go. I would like to see some of your macro work with this! Post a few more circuit board shots -I am seeing a collage style collection coming together for another spare frame!

Re: What camera do you use?

Here's my effort Mika, not quite as posh as yours and didn't last long but did the job quite well!

These days I normally use my built in camera flash on minimum, to trigger my Sigma ef500 which is bounced off the ceiling or a difuser.

    Couldn't resist anymore...

Funny... I picked up a Leica "bridge" VL1 last week for fun -and took some remarkably similar shots! Laughing

P.S. Your second shot went to the printer last week!

Great stuff! Yes - thumbs up

I got this baby yesterday, so I haven't taken a whole lot of pictures with it yet. My wallet hurts... Sad

I haven't actually even tried it properly yet Laughing I also have some macro rings pending proper experiments, but as they are completely dumb and the glasses I have cannot be stepped down with them, the picture quality immediately takes a hit. That Tamron 28-70 <insert lots of letters I can't remember> has a quite nice macro by itself.

I don't think I have any more good shots right now aside from this, but I'll keep this in mind.

@Step1: Nice! Mine is constructed from a couple of white 12V LED light rings, originally intended for installation inside car head lights to evoke public ridicule. Two different diameter rings, an UV filter, structural parts hacked from an empty DVD spindle, and some hot glue Wink Nice and bright but the colour spectrum obviously isn't that great compared to a real flash bulb or incandescent lights.

Yes, I've seen that too Jaff!

Looks interesting to say the least! Do you have any information about it's price? Saw somewhere on line the figure 1200 USD, that would make it tangible as a second camera for me.

That is what I have been seeing as well... Would love to see an all black version!

I need another camera like I need a hole in the head -but this is really tempting! Looking forward to the reviews.

BTW, my first foray into digital was a Fuji about 10 years ago -still have it!

Re: What camera do you use?

I took this during our recent cold spell..

But can you believe it was taken with a cheapo Fuji Finepix a204 2MP from around 2003! I have had many cameras since but have always kept my first digital camera.

    I love that shot, Stonk!

Megapixels is mostly a useless measure. Who needs 12 mpix, when the end result will only get better if you scale it down by 1:4 as the first thing.

I have also kept my first digital camera, a Kodak DC240 from year 2000. It was clumsy, slow and needed a lot of light, but in good conditions the results were pretty good. This is already noisy due to low light...

...which was in 2003 replaced by a Canon S45, which I still use. It's rather big for a pocket camera, but has full manual controls and gives great results.

Re: What camera do you use?

Too bad that it failed after a few years - apparently there was a loose screw inside from the factory, and when it finally dropped off it shorted something and disabled the display. I bought a S50 with a physically stuck lens for peanuts, and transplanted the optics from the S45 into it. There aren't that many parts inside a digital camera... Unsure

Wasn't too keen on doing it on my camera either Laughing

But there wasn't much to lose, it was only fit for scrap without a display, the donor cost me 20 euros or something, and I really wanted to keep it instead of getting another compact with substandard usability. This has a decent optical viewfinder, for example.
