Beogram 4000: worth it? You bet!

    Hello everyone,

I am about to buy this thing here:

I've already asked Martin, but I'd like your opinions too, especially since I can't see it "in the flesh". It is sold non-working of course. The arm carriage looks askew...

The owner assures me it was in his family, he just inherited it, which I believe. He wants 100 €.

Thanks Jaff. Anyone else ? What about the arm then? Knackered or not?

The drive screw appears out of alignment w/ the rails. This would seem to indicate that the rear of the transit is not sitting/engaging properly and/or the white pentagonal guides are askew in the front. This would most likely have happened during an attempt to service, possibly in transit. It is pretty simple to get it back in physical alignment, but then it would need to be determined what just may be wrong with it, electrically or otherwise.

I still think it is a good buy. They are not easy to find -and the cosmetics look to be pretty good.

Seems like the inner side of the carriage transport is loose and standing up, while the two rails it rides on are still down. Can't remember what keeps it down and I don't want to squint through the explosion diagrams, but it could be an easy fix. Or maybe not - but I'd buy it anyway.

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

I'm not too worried because I have recently worked on a white 4002 which now works great (it was broken when I got it for 50€), so I think I got the basics. But the 4000 looks more complicated electronically... and mechanically!

Oh well let's take the plunge!

Indeed, but to me -that is part of its charm!

You will soon realize that on paper the 4002/4004 is the lesser spec'd table -but in everyday use, probably the better table!

However, the 4000 is the ultimate B&o table and is a MUST for any "collection."

That looks like a reasonbale buy. Mine was far more expensive and arrived in many bits when I got it thanks to he courier. Went back together OK!

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

I would snap it up :) Looks very nice cosmetically but it is far more complicated than the other models. There is a good fault finding guide in the SM though!

No harm in trying to barter though!!! offer E80.

It doesn't appear to be askew (or as much) in the new pics.

Might the inheritor have tried to do something (pulling on the mech) in an attempt to disassemble for pics or otherwise? ...or has he put it back together?

Also, are the pulley(s) missing for the transit drive? (last of the new pics).

1.) Look at last of new pics (7124) -zoom in.

2.) Just above the cartridge, you will see a white plate w/ (2) FH screws (between the carriage drive motor and the red indicator arm)

3.) On the other side -there should be a pulley wheel for the drive screw.

Not the end of the world -I *think* the 4002/4 wheel is the same... just an observation.

Ah yes I can see it now, thank you, I had missed that one! The owner can't tell me what happened to the deck because the previous owner passed away, taking this with him...

I'll have to find one then. Still worth €100?

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

I had the price rebated  a bit, because of the missing pulley. Has anyone here got one? Maybe I could adapt one from an old VCR or something... Any thoughts please? How does the MMC4000 compare to the later models?

The lid doesn't look too good, but then this was the case on my 4002 (nay, worse) and it came out really nice and shiny!

There are at least two different sizes - the shaft seems to vary in diameter. The pulley itself is prone to cracking - Frede kindly sent me a spare one when my 6000ran into similar problems. If you have a friend with a lathe, I would suggest getting one made as you can use better materials.

Yes thanks for the sensible suggestion Peter (!), but I still need an original one to copy from now don't I?

The carriage worm screw in my 4002 is indeed smaller in diametre and is made of brass, like all the later ones.

I suppose what you need is a template. I can probably pull mine apart but will need to look for something to measure with! Seeing if I can post as Peter again!!

(and the answer is no, unless I can be bothered to save and paste a few times!!)

Yes! It wasn't supposed to be secret - my normal log in is misbehaving and until we move server, I am Doctor!! I would have thought the 4401 was a bit of a give away!

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

That was a good spot from Jaff!!!

The pulley normally dips just at or below the surface plate hence why there is a cutout. I doubt overall diameter is going to be all that critical, so I would make something that looks right. I have a 4002 apart at the moment I will check that pulley as I doubt the outer diameter changed....

I would still get the player IMO you have something that is potentially worth 3 times the price fully working!!! Lid looks ok at least the alu trim at the top looks clean, they are often peeling off!

Anyway, I don't understand what is taking so long - go and pick it up!!!

    Olly.

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

    Thank you Olly!

The deck is mine actually. I haven't picked it up yet but it's a matter of days... I got it for €80.

Anyway, should anyone have a spare pulley...Embarrassed I also emailed Tim Jarman who always has good advice.

    Cheers!

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

    Hello,

Peter, Tim and Martin all suggested to fabricate a new pulley.

    That's all very well but:

    1) No friends with a lathe,

    2) Does anyone have a template, or would like to draw one, because I planned to look at all my scrap VCR, cassette and CD boxes of wheels to see if there would be any matching pulleys I could possibly adapt.

Listening to very emotional "Jealous Guy" at the moment. What a song.

    Re: Beogram 4000: worth it?

It's one of the things on my going-to-reproduce-when-I-have-the-time list.

I remember seeing a "solution" involving a LEGO wheel
glued to the end of the threaded shaft that worked very well.
