It worked for me, and I did not experience any drawbacks whatsoever. So far, all of our DVD's play fine on this machine. From memory, I think I had to try different remote controls (Beo4, Beoling 1000, Beolink 7000) before I found one that did the job. I do not remember which one ultimately worked...
