Beocenter 2200 - Only one speaker working when playing records???

    Hi there,

I have recently aquired a Beocenter 2200 but although the speakers both work when the radio is selected, only one speaker works when playing records (Actually, you can hear the faintest whisper coming through whilst the other works fine). I read on another post that this could this be a problem with the stylus/cartridge?

The stylus arm sometimes skates across records, if this is of any relevance.

This is the first vinyl player I have ever owned so my knowledge is very limited and any help woud be greatly appreciated.

Would you suggest replacing the stylus and cartridge? Are these two components separate or need to be replaced together? Specific brand/model required?

Also, where could I source these components (if necessary) and what sort of price range am I looking at?

    (I live in Chester, England)

Thanks in advance for any assistance

    Joe

It does sound like the cartridge is toast. Shame as this is probably the most expensive bit! It is a B&O specific cartridge and B&O no longer make them! However Soundsmith in the US do and they are sold via B&O dealers in the UK. However they are not cheap - think £150 I am afraid!

I am not completely convinced I would spend £150 on a Beocenter 2200 though! It is a very good looking system but was actually built in Japan rather than Denmark and the parts are very tricky to get hold of. Usually quite a few on eBay though.

I agree with Peter that it isn;t worth spending too much on a Beocenter 2200. You should be able to find another one in working condition with cartridge for around £50.

Before doing anything drastic it might be worth working through the following FAQ on the soundsmith site:
