Andy,
The potentiometer sits at the underside of the top part when in service position.
It is motordriven through a belt and a gearbox which also pulls
the screen for the volume readout using a dial string.
Quite an arrangement.
With all due respect Andy, and don't get me wrong, if you can't locate
the potentiometer, this may not be a task for you.
WD40 is good for losening rusty bolts in a car, it contains
lubricants but also acid in some form and probably other chemicals
that don't evaporate completely and which use we do not need.
We don't want that anywhere in our homes, especially not in our B&O.
For this task we need "real" contact cleaner with a hint of acid-free
oil in it.
Kontakt Chemie makes the "Kontakt 61" which is what I normally use,
though this is an exception from my normal practice.
Contact cleaner does not remove anything by itself, it merely losens and shifts the dirt and oxidation around and in the best
case it evaporates completely without adding to the mess. Clean and dry is good.
Normally, I would take the things completely apart, clean everything using contact cleaner or similar, wipe dry, lubricate sparringly any seize- or wear-prone parts and put back together. In this case though, the potentiometer is quite hard to access or even remove from the Beomaster and hard to take apart afterwards, besides it doesn't make much difference doing so. Do cover up the belt drive and dial string if you intent to spray to prevent excess slippage.
