New update on Friday at 9 am for BeoMaster 5

The latest update from B&O has a lot of problems with N. Music. Therefore B&O will release a new update. This information comes from my B&O dealer. So update you BeoMaster 5 on Friday after 9 am.

Anyone not working or working from home who has been able to download this update yet? My BS5 been a complete mess since last update (tried reboot, delete database and recovery without any improvements in performance) so I am really looking forward to this. I am glad I've kept my old BS9000. Without it there would not have been much music at home lately.

Since the last update, my BS5 has been having many problems. Cover art sometimes doesn't appear. The GO button is unresponsive and has a very long delay upon startup. The system crashes altogether. I had NONE of these problems prior to the last update. I agree with an earlier poster who commented that he would like to see B&O stop using the customer as beta testers!

Every few months we have the same thread. Some update rumours, then some of us find out that a new update had been dropped into our "machines"... then we find out what has changed...sometimes nothing happens...

In short: such an update process is irritating.

Again and again... we learn about updates either through forum posts or when something doesn't work as it used to before.

In my view a matter of pathetic CRM by Bang Olufsen not to preadvise about an update or provide a heads up to its customer base.

The fix for this problem could be so simple: As BS5/BM5 owners - including BS5 encore - we are fully known to B&O by having shared the email for registration. If it is a matter of database consent... let us know !

It is beyond me that this approach by Bang & Olufsen, shrouded in secrecy, spiced with surprises soldiers on. It should stop !

Wouldn't it be great if B&O gives a prenotice ?... it could even be framed in such a way that the owner base would feel proud again and again that it invested into an expensive piece of audio equipment.

    Let us be optimistic.

I just got my BM5 back, now with a 1TB disk, which also is much more silent compared to the 500GB version Yes - thumbs up

My dealer said the update was planned for release Friday this week, but it will not be available before next week. It should mainly fix problems with N.MUSIC.

I think that B&O's lack of quality in the software (just look at the SW problems with  BS3, DVB-HD and BS/BM5) is partly (mostly?) because it was outsourced years ago. It must be complex to have different outsourced SW partners to develop and also make sure that all integration still works.

    There is something about B&O.....

These are actually relatively small systems as far as software development goes. But you're right in that outsourcing software development places a big burden on the project management. I believe B&Os problems lie mostly there. DVB-HD is an example of a deeply embedded software application and it is probably being developed by a very small team; stuff like that is very difficult to speed up simply by throwing more manpower at it - there isn't that much of "cannon fodder" type of coding in there that could be delegated to just about any programmer.

B&O owns a software company in Estonia, but I have no idea what they do there and to what extent. The rest I believe is done in India like so many other companies... I'm not saying that they mightn't be capable, but you can imagine the difference in enthusiasm, if the programmer actually has some first hand interest in the target system and could even afford one some day. Not that programming would be generally well paid anywhere else either Indifferent

I know that my dealer is frustrated with all the problems that the SW updates cause, and as a customer I am also frustrated, and first in the line to complain to is the dealer.

I hope B&O will have more focus on the SW development going forward, not only regarding new features, but certainly also the quality. With the BS5 systems, SW is one of the most critical parts of the system.

    There is something about B&O.....

It is better to wait a little in order to get a working SW version out :-) There must be some issues since it is not released yet?

There is a still a problem with FLAC files ...
Some of these files are not recognised for the MOTS function.
You can play them when you select them, but they will not be in the MOTS database.
I tried to figure out what could be wrong with the flac files, but i can't see anything wrong, other soft does not have problems at first sight with these files.
I got messages like "MOTS result 2 for ..."  , invalid file  or "unable to get file attributes"
I was in contact with beocare, and they told the problem will be investigated and solved in a future release.

It has now been about 7 hours since I performed the update. I'm finding that the BeoSound 5 now plays only one song (when telling it to play an album) and then hangs with the screen saying "PAUSE." Is anyone else encountering this? Is the update requiring time to rebuild the database??
