Newbie in search of advice. Beocord 5000 Type 4923 and Beogram 4002

    Hi, All!

A newbie here. Ive always been a fan of Bang&Olufsen but the price range was so high a while back. Now that the units are getting older and their in need of service people are getting rid of them instead of having them repaired. You can find them all over auction sites for a fraction of the cost.

I just acquired 4 units off ebay. Today I just got my first unit in the mail. A Beocord 5000 type 4923. And waiting on two Beogram 4002's and the other is a 6500 Master Control Panel.  Getting the 6500 MCP was an error on my part. I was thinking it was an integrated type pre amp that all the components tied into before the amp. Later I found out the receivers are the central brain of the units and the MCP was a type of multi room remote.

Today after getting the Beocord in the mail I was anshious to dive into it to find out the issue it had. Bought it off eBay as is, and inoperable for only $10.00 After removing the top it was obvious the unit had never been serviced. Everything is clean and untouched by prying hands since it was off the production line. You never know what you'll get from eBay. Testing the unit it powers on with one single red dot LED. when you try to touch the door open on the front all you hear the loader tray motor engage without any movement. when I pressed any of the function keys inside nothing happend but the front display now reeads 00000. I did find that R20 on the power supply was burnt looking but still had the 10 ohm value. I found by researching online to replace it with the flameproof type 10 ohm, so I did. After carefully disassembling the rest of the unit turns out degrading belts have led to the doom and demise of the unit with its previous owner.

Now I need a belt kit for the tape deck and I should order for the Beorgams 4002's as well. The turntables are still in transit. Im just praying they make it threw shipping ok.

My plan is to not use the a beoreciever but to tie all these units up to a nice push pull 6BQ5 tube amp. I have a solid state Yamaha preamp to integrate all these units to the tube amp. The preamp will give me all the inputs I need, plus its capable of MM and MC type turntable pickups.

Part of the fun is the hunt for all these beauties that are still out there for auction. The other is the labor of love working on the repairs. I'm open to any advice on these two unit. Like any repairs, mods, or just even simple techniques on maintenance that should be done to keep units up and running flawlessly.  It would be greatly appreciated! Also Im still need to research the pinouts on the din type cord on the tape deck (L & R input and outputs). The same with the beogram 4002. output DIN to RCA Type.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Doug

    Doug,

Welcome to Beoworld !  Yes - thumbs up

Nice collection, some of the better of the older.
Buying the MCP was not a mistake, you just need to find a Beomaster 6500 now. Laughing

I can help you with new belts.

    Doug,

The BeoGram 4002s are solidly built, mechanical masterpieces, well worth keeping in good repair.

Most of their defects are well-known, and the fixes available, as long as you're technically capable.

Let us know their condition, and symptoms of any problems when you get them.

I got the first beogram 4002 turntable today, It's beautiful! Like the beocord 5000 I got off eBay I lucked out and got one that hadnt been opened for repairs of any kind. When I first pluged it in the platter started turning without me starting it. When I hit the start the arm started to move but it didnt stop. It kept going. When it reached the end then it returned back and the platter kept spinning. I opened it to find a white wire lifted off it's solder pad on the tone arm sensor board. That was it! now it works great! I've never heard my albums sound so good. It's just a few other things to do then Im done. All the lamps work except the 33 rpm light. And there are a few plastic keepers I need. You know when your accessing the inside how you pull the wood trim forward. There are screws with plastic washers that keep the wood trim from lifting. The plastic pieces (washers) are broke.

Back on the Beocord 5000 typw 4923. I was able to find a belt kit locally. It played well for a bit but now the motor started making a noise. Im sure its the internal motor bearing thats going. I need to see if Im able to disassemble the motor to lubricate the bearings. If that dont work I may need to search around for a motor. Im sure thats going to be hard to find.

At the very least, clean and lubricate the bearings, as shown here.

Also, although you might think it easy to replace your speed indicator bulb with another, you'll find that the white housing is deformed from the bulb's heat. I replaced mine with yellow LEDs, as described in the same posting.

Those plastic keepers are unobtanium, and I use the hard clear plastic card, which one finds on many bubble-packaged consumer goods today, as a substitute.

The plastic pieces are little excentrics to help align the wood-trim to the metal surfaces (plus hold it down).
I had some reproduced in unbreakable polycarbonate at some point, maybe I still have some, I will have a look.

Use incorrect belts and wear out the bearings in minutes.
    I have new motors
    - and correct belts...
