Hi, All!
A newbie here. Ive always been a fan of Bang&Olufsen but the price range was so high a while back. Now that the units are getting older and their in need of service people are getting rid of them instead of having them repaired. You can find them all over auction sites for a fraction of the cost.
I just acquired 4 units off ebay. Today I just got my first unit in the mail. A Beocord 5000 type 4923. And waiting on two Beogram 4002's and the other is a 6500 Master Control Panel. Getting the 6500 MCP was an error on my part. I was thinking it was an integrated type pre amp that all the components tied into before the amp. Later I found out the receivers are the central brain of the units and the MCP was a type of multi room remote.
Today after getting the Beocord in the mail I was anshious to dive into it to find out the issue it had. Bought it off eBay as is, and inoperable for only $10.00 After removing the top it was obvious the unit had never been serviced. Everything is clean and untouched by prying hands since it was off the production line. You never know what you'll get from eBay. Testing the unit it powers on with one single red dot LED. when you try to touch the door open on the front all you hear the loader tray motor engage without any movement. when I pressed any of the function keys inside nothing happend but the front display now reeads 00000. I did find that R20 on the power supply was burnt looking but still had the 10 ohm value. I found by researching online to replace it with the flameproof type 10 ohm, so I did. After carefully disassembling the rest of the unit turns out degrading belts have led to the doom and demise of the unit with its previous owner.
Now I need a belt kit for the tape deck and I should order for the Beorgams 4002's as well. The turntables are still in transit. Im just praying they make it threw shipping ok.
My plan is to not use the a beoreciever but to tie all these units up to a nice push pull 6BQ5 tube amp. I have a solid state Yamaha preamp to integrate all these units to the tube amp. The preamp will give me all the inputs I need, plus its capable of MM and MC type turntable pickups.
Part of the fun is the hunt for all these beauties that are still out there for auction. The other is the labor of love working on the repairs. I'm open to any advice on these two unit. Like any repairs, mods, or just even simple techniques on maintenance that should be done to keep units up and running flawlessly. It would be greatly appreciated! Also Im still need to research the pinouts on the din type cord on the tape deck (L & R input and outputs). The same with the beogram 4002. output DIN to RCA Type.
Many thanks in advance,
Doug
