    Beogram 4002 w/6000 cartridge

    Hi All,

I've just purchased a B&O 4002 turntable with a B&O 6000 (believe its a moving coil) cartridge.  Mechanically the system is absolutely beautiful.  My issue is the 5 pin DIN connector.  I finally located a 5-pin DIN to 4 RCA cable, but I am not at all sure if I have exactly what I need.  I seem to be getting signal out of both channels, but do not seem to drive one side with much sound...I'm sure someone out there canadvise me as to what I need.

On another note, I'd love to find the original screwdriver, balance,  and cartridge cleaning brush for this table.

Assuming the correct plugs are being used, I would actually suspect the cartridge. The MMC6000 is a wonderful cartridge - or at least was. I have several and none of them will now track a quad record due to the suspension hardening and the stylus wearing. The 6000 had a Pramanik profile stylus mounted on a Beryllium cantilever. The profile is a modified Shibata type stylus which has a very small horizontal contact area but a large vertical contact area. They are quite fragile and seem a lot more prone to wear than the later MMC20CL. They are of course older.

The simplest way to test this hypothesis is to use another cartridge - I realise that may not be so easy!

Other problems could be a loose wire in the DIN plug - another easy fix!

Thanks for the reply Peter.  I am still not sure I have the right connections.  I bought a DIN 5-pin female to 4 RCA adaptor and plugged the male DIN out of the turntable to that.  I then used the red and white leads to my pre-amp's phono inputs.  My amp is showing both channels being driven, but I get little or no sound out of one side...Maybe it is the cartridge, but I assume I'd see a reduction in signal strength.  The signal looks strong enough, just no sound...still think its my cabling choice, but am not completely sure.

I take it that you have tried the other plugs as well? I see no reason why it won't work. Pin 2 is earth which will be common to all the pins and then the other four are either inputs or outputs.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a Beogram 4002 that has had the DIN connector cut off. I'm capable of using a soldering iron and would love to just solder on 2 RCA's and be done with it. Does anyone have the pinout for that connector? Thanks in advance - Eric

There should be four wires - a common ground, R, L, and the chassis earth. The earth attaches to the earth on the amplifier and the common ground to the -ve of both RCA plugs and the live L and R obviously going to the plugs +ve terminal. The problem is the colours!! What do you have?

Hey Peter - thanks for the reply - aside from the ground (braided shield) the colors are yellow, brown, red and blue. Thanks! Eric

Give me a day or so - I'll have to pull mine apart to work out which is which!

Problem! The colours in mine are different!! Mine is a 4004 but mine are:

Common ground -  Pin 2 - the silver shield

    R live - red

    L Live - white

Chassis earth - attached to Din plug casing - black. Mine also has a blue and a yellow  which are the proto Datalink connections.

Thanks Pete! That just might do it. I'll ignore the yellow and blue and use the brown and red as left and right. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again - Eric
