    Beovox 3800 - Fret removal - How ?

    Hi

I've bought a pair of the above (on the recomendation of Beocentral - "Pocket money Masterpieces" )

I want to replace the capacitiors in the crossover but can't see how to get the frets off - they seem well and truly stuck. The speakers are in great cosmetic condition and I don't want to damage them. Any ideas ?

    Cheers

    Nigel

Peter has a pair of these, he will know for sure but he is away at the moment.
Aren't the frets just held by magnets?
I know some other of the larger types from that period are.

Thanks very much Martin - they seem very securely fixed in place! - I'll email Peter in a week or two.

Did you see my post in Andy's thread about re-foaming ? - I was wondering if you could impart your detailed knowledge about refoaming the trickier, smaller tollerence speakers. Can you educate us regarding shims, spiders and the dark art of refoaming ?! (Photos will be fairly crucial for this to be effective)

    Cheers

    Nigel, yes I saw it.
Maybe that would be good idea but, god knows (and Andy as well),
that it takes forever to write down everything you do and take photos.
I did it while restoring a JET valve radio a couple of months ago
and it took me days to just write the text.
I will give it some thought next time though.

Shims are tiny sheets of plastic or PVC of different width and thickness
that are inserted to align and lock the coil while working on the surround. Sometimes, for drivers that are precisely manufactured, CNC-machined gigs, jigs and thingamabobs can be used to save time.
The spider is the zig-zag folded guide that sits behind the speaker cone, carrying the coil at the inner edge of the cone, steering it so to speak, it's condition is just as important as that of the surround.

I used to own a pair of Rosewood Beovox 3800s - the frets were indeed held by magnets - a slim blade (not a knife) helped to ease it off in one corner and the fret could then be gently eased off.

Agree with above. A large flat blade does it nicely! I am only holding onto these for you Martin! Not perfect but they do have the trumpet stands! Have to confess to not having played them yet! Just cleaned them up a bit!

Tempting indeed, especially since they were never available here in Denmark but I don't dare to think of the shipping costs...Huh?
