Nigel, yes I saw it.
Maybe that would be good idea but, god knows (and Andy as well),
that it takes forever to write down everything you do and take photos.
I did it while restoring a JET valve radio a couple of months ago
and it took me days to just write the text.
I will give it some thought next time though.
Shims are tiny sheets of plastic or PVC of different width and thickness
that are inserted to align and lock the coil while working on the surround. Sometimes, for drivers that are precisely manufactured, CNC-machined gigs, jigs and thingamabobs can be used to save time.
The spider is the zig-zag folded guide that sits behind the speaker cone, carrying the coil at the inner edge of the cone, steering it so to speak, it's condition is just as important as that of the surround.
