Re: D I Y foam replacement on S120s. Step by step with photo's....... by Andy T

I wasn't expecting this. I've read every post of this thread and it is a gold for me as I do not have any technical skills for audio equipment and once I encounter foam rotting like this I will use your guide to do it by myself on my pair of MC120's.

Too bad they're not making any of those scratch removing liquids.

    Great work!

Teak Oil will make scratches a lot less visible.

What a brilliant thread.  It took me about a year to get round to it from start to finish, but I bought a pair of rotted teak S45s off eBay for a tenner and have just finally finished the refoaming job, and hooked them up to the Beogram CD50 that Martin's just fixed it for me and fed some Northern Soul through it and - at least to my untutored ears - they sound great...  Thanks Andy!

I've just bought these today for £20.

Looking forward to following Andy's instructions!

    Cheers

I was hoping one of us got those Nigel. I'm a big fan of the S55's & would have bid myself if I didn't have a pair sat in a box from Graham (joeyboygolf).

Rosewood is my favourite colour for the S/M series - just lovely.

    Chris.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

If they aren't too bad then Mr Sheen Classic scratch remover will hide most scratches - as well as giving a nice polish. Comes in different shades.

Deep scratches & cup ring marks (you'd be amazed at how many Beovox owners have used them as coffee tables) obviously need a bit more intense attention.

Thanks for the advice Chris. I've got no idea where I'm going to put them Laughing  I have a slight concern that when SWMBO sees them she'll demand that they replace my MS150s... I can hear it now "Well, they look the same, just a bit smaller"....

I thought for that price I would use them as an experiment in refoaming larger speakers and replacing crossover caps. The last time I had a soldering iron in my hand was when I was at school! And when I say refoaming larger speakers - I've never refoamed any speakers and I've got 8 penta midranges waiting to be done!

The seller says they haven't got foam rot....I bet they're sticky though!

Picking them up in a couple of hours - I shall report back.

    Cheers

    Nigel

I just finished refoaming a set of S.80's a few weeks back. I typically use a D cell battery to center the driver while glueing up the outer ring.

Easy enough job. all that needed is a soft touch and a bit of patience. A speaker crossover is about as good a place to reaquaint yourself with soldering and desoldering as I can think of.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Eugene

They're in great condition - almost mint complete with all packaging, cables and user guide!. The foams were covered in thick dust which I suspect may have helped preserve them! They've got hairline cracks in them, so they're starting to go.

They do still sound very nice though!

    Cheers

Actually I was a bit surprised when you said you had not soldered or done any work at the component level in quite awhile.

I have read a number of your posts over the years and watched a number of your eBay auctions. I figured you to be a tech geek like some of the rest of us.

That aside. you do know the brand.

I'm for sure not a tech geek...... but I do know one who helps me out enormously!
