Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
Step 8: fire this baby up!
I "fully inserted" the Soundsmith cartridge and she worked just fine. On the BG3404 that filled in for the BG4002, I couldn't "fully insert" the Soundsmith. I had to leave a gap of almost a millimeter. See my avatar photograph.
Initial impression: she sounds fantastic!

Step 10: acknowledgements.
Thanks to Benny for fixing the BM4000 and the BG4002.
Thanks to Peter for modifying the cartridge and returning it so quickly.
Thanks to Dillen/Martin for the belts.
Thanks to all the other Beoworlders who dropped by this thread to offer help and/or encouragement on the BG4002.
And a special thanks to Burantek/Jaff/Jeff who made the heart and soul of my main system possible.

Rich:
Step 1: pour some home brew. This particular home brew I call "Black and Tan Your Hide." It's a blend of a brown ale and an Irish stout with added "booster" to take the alcohol content up over 6%.
Its imposible to install and test vintage BEO without it, glad it works congrats Rich

I know the Brits love warm beer, but I'm sure even they don't microwave it!
Congratulations on getting the deck back up. Check the platter height, according to pic #7 it seems to ride a bit low...

Good eye, Mika, I'm sure it's low. It is on my list of things to do.
Now that I have a garage system up again - BM1900 and BV M70 pair 2 - a little cleaning and fine tuning of the BG4002 may be next.

I don't get it. What is a "garage system"?
Surely you don't mean that you put a BeoSystem in the garage?
Here, we park on the kerb in front of the house - only the ultra-wealthy have a private garage for their cars. I guess that means that if they can afford a garage, they can afford a new BeoSystem in the garage!
My Beo's are where I can keep an eye on them - one in the living room - BC9300, one in my bedroom - BM3400, and one in my workshop - BM1600 (and that's a super-clean workshop)!

Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
Menahem.
Nearly all houses in the US has a garage, the mens in the US use the garage as a meeting point, friends comes by drink a beer, listen to music having a good time, they cant do this in the house, but why go into the house if you have beer and music in the garage, forthermore, in the house there is a fabric selector (wife), she is responsible for the children and their education, and drinking beer and playing loud music is a bad exsample for children, so the US men keeps that in the garage, and what is a garage without a nice B&O soundsystem.
Menahem this is a joke, but its nearly tru, Sorry Rich I just had to

That is exactly what I meant. In Florida we do not have basements. Thus the garage is our workshop, storeroom, and laundry room more often than a place to keep our vehicles. It is also where I have my mini gym.
We keep our vehicles in the driveway in front of the garage.

Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
I too have a garage system. But its no BeoSystem!
I am able to shoe-horn one car into the garage amongst all the junk. Under the cover at the top of the RL60.2 thread is a 1971 Monte Carlo!

Much better, but how is it playing now, after, I suppuse, several trial runs, and did you check the speed again.
Congratulations it looks beautiful.

It plays as beautifully as it looks. I could not be happier with the vintage system.
Well, on second thought, I guess I could be happier if I had a BC2400 open reel, or BC8004, or BC2200, or BC5000 (Type 4716), so that I can send the BC2400 cassette deck into the guest bedroom system.
And then there's the quest for a BG1000 fitted with a 78 stylus so I can start collecting 78s!
Ah, the good ol' Beovirus. What would we do without it?

It seems like we will be stuck here for years to come, first to get our equipment working perfectly, then to keep it that way, and doing that realizing our dreams/wishes as they appear under way. Let work on it.

I have checked the speed just about every day the past week and both speeds have been spot on.
One thing I am noticing with my current main setup, I am hearing bass guitar from LPs better than I ever have. Is it the new Soundsmith cartridge? Is it the BG4002? Is it the BM4000? Is it the pair of M70s? Is it the system as a whole?
I played an LP in the guest bedroom last night (old MMC20EN -> BG3404 -> BM2400 -> S40) and the sound is good, but way brighter than the main system. And the bass guitar is just not there like in the main system. Very listenable system, just not in the same league as the main system.

Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
The Soundsmith gives a clearer sound all over, and your M70s goes down to 27 Hz, your S40s is limited at 49 Hz, try the S40s wallmounted it may help a little.

Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
Funny - I had the S40s mounted on the wall in the garage, ear height when standing, and they sounded better. Also, the volume of the garage is at least three times the volume of the guest bedroom.
I am kind of stuck with position for the S40s in the guest bedroom. On dressers, almost backed up to the wall.

Re: BG4002 Down! (Back up already)
Tuesday and Wednesday I was in Wisconsin and Iowa on business and stopped at the used record store in La Crosse. Picked up a larger than usual haul, so that was cool.
Last night I was home and cleaned and played a few of the new additions to the collection. Started with a 45 and that played just fine. Then I put an LP on. Pressed start. The platter spun maybe half a revolution and stopped, while the tonearm moved into position and dropped the stylus at the beginning of the record.
Long story short: I pressed buttons, I removed the platter and checked the belt, I put it back together, pressed buttons: still would only play a half a revolution on 33, but if I pressed start, then 45, the motor would work and spin the record at 45.
Oh, well - after Evan's recent luck and his "dear God why is this happening to me" thread - I just figured I'd box it back up and ship it back to Benny.
So I played some of the new additions on the RX 2 hooked up to the main system, and made plans to bring the spare BG3404 into the main system over the weekend.
But then a few hours later I fiddled with it again. I took the platter and belt off and repeatedly pressed the start and 33 buttons. After a few minutes of twiddling, the motor would spin continuously, not just for a few seconds. So I put the belt back on, reassembled the turntable, and tried a record. Worked flawlessly. Played another record. Worked flawlessly.
Conclusion: either (a) my Beogram 4002 has a mind of its own and will only work when she wants to, or (b) a gremlin lives inside her.
