Do rear speaker make sense in my setup?

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if you please could tell me your suggestion regarding a pair of rear speakers.

left/right from BV8-40 a pair of BL8002 (all speaker are plugged into the DSS-system of the BV-8-40)
    left corner a BL2
couch 3.5 meters from BL8002/BV away
couch placed straight to the wall

50% of the time, I listen to music from the BS4.

I do not have space to place the rear speaker in the back of the couch (couch is placed to wall). So if I will add a pair of BL6000, they will stand left right to the couch (one speaker 30 centimeter beside me, other 1.5 beside me, but in the same line as my head),or if I mount a pair of BL4000, they will only be some centimeter behind me. A pair of BL3 are too much money.

So do I benefit from rear speakers/do they make sense in my setup, or is it a waste of money and I will ruin the sound of BL8002/BL2?

Forget suggestions like move the couch away (you do not know my wife).

    Thanks in advace.

    Take care

According to THIS your setup will be correct. You just have to adjust the speaker distance on Speaker menu of the Beovision. I find it nice to hear my 5.1 setup in movies and in HD SAT broadcasts. Other than that i have to say that rear speakers are getting too little info to really shine. Of course on SPEAKER 4 mode you can enjoy a nice soccer match in enhanced stero sound! Hope this helps.

    DrDimitris,

already bought the BL2? I remember, you were struggling with the purchase of a subwoofer!

You will see an improvement that is for sure with movies and TV. With music, that is down to your opinion. I prefer 5.1 for movies but 2 speakers for music.

If I were you I would try and move the couch. Not a way from the wall but more toward the center of the speakers. Even just 50cm would help. All you have to do it tell the TV how far the speakers are from the listening position and then the system will de/increase volume and delay speakers output by tiny amounts to make sure the sound hits you at the right time.

I just moved from 5.0 to 2.0 and really miss the rear speakers but it is the start of a move to go all B&O over the next few years.

Sound is personal. Ask your dealer for a demo at home

Smile. Yes , i am still searching ( i wouldn't say struggling Stick out tongue). I'm taking my time, although i would love to compare BL2 and BL11 in my home setup. Dealer's in Greece do not do that. (Except for my friend Spiros who has this advantage Big Smile). Also i am 200 and 300 km away from those 2 dealers respectively. But as you already know, my mind is set on BL2. Will see. The charts on the DTS website i gave you above, are pretty informative. Did you check it?

Re: Do rear speaker make sense in my setup?

    Dear DrDimitris,

thank you for the link. Yes, I´ve checked  the homepage. Because I´m not able to remove the couch from the wall (my wife will 100% for sure kill me), the 5.1 setup will make sence (regarding to DTS homepage). But would also be a problem, because the couch is not standing in the middle of the room. I only have 30 cm space left to the corner on one side. So one speaker (e.g. BL6002) would be 30 cm away, the other one round 3.5 meters.

Best, but most expensice solution would be a pair of BL3, fixed over my head while sitting on the couch. Even a pair of second life BL3 are not under € 2200 available.

Why don`t you buy a second hand BL2? If your are lucky, you can grap a unit for under € 1500 (if have seen slighly used ones from the UK for € 1300 on ebay from a TV-room). If the setup won`t work (you will love it, I`m sure), you can resell it. With the DSS of your BV in combination with the BL2 you are able to receive a very good result (not too "boom boom").

I am searching since some months now and i have never found such a price (1300Euro) for a BL2 on ebay. I also wait for something to come up on Lifestyle AV which i trust miles more than ebay.

    DrDimitris,

you have to search on http://www.ebay.co.uk

Sometimes ebay search does not show all international offers. Below a finished auction for a good price on ebay.co.uk

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bang-Olufsen-Beolab-2-Gray-Subwoofer-/230576835591?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item35af734c07

I do not think, following offer will reach € 1500.

    Major,

the tiny BL4? I do not think they will keep the pace of my BL8002/BL2 front setup??? But wall mounted they look of cause great.

I had a set of Beolab 4 PCs and they were impressive. It was just and idea but as they are not too expensive and because they won't be working too hard as you will be sitting close to them and they will be rear speakers they may work pretty well. I wouldn't use them with music too much. Just an idea but people usually don't mention them that much for some reason but they are good speakers for their size.

I think rear and/or surround is the best use of BeoLab 4.  3 mounting options.

Why are you set on mounting the speakers behind you with your couch against the wall?  Many would recommend that you mount the surround speakers on the side walls pointed at the couch.  If you use BL6000 I would mount them as well as the BL4000

Giving your setup, I should really consider or try if possible, the BL4's. My sitting area is more or less the same as yours, aprox. 3,50 by 4,50 meter and i am using the Beolab 4000 as rear speakers. Sound is very nice, however in movies they are not used as much as you would expect. Or better formulated... the BL4 will probably deliver the same sound quality for movies given the size of the room.

I think a combination of BL4 with a Beolab 11 would bring you more benefit while staying within a certain financial boundaries.

I think I would mount the BL4 either at the wall or at the ceiling.

Re: Do rear speaker make sense in my setup?

    Hi guys,

still have the wish to upgrade my stereo-setup to a surround-setup (my wife not). Please take a closer look at the front and back of the living room. In the past days, I have read all articles regarding rear speakers and mixing ALT-speakers with non ALT-speakers. Even a pair of used BL3 are hard to find under € 2000 and I do not want to burn a big hole in the wallet because I´d like to buy a new B&O telly in 2011. So I`m struggling with given circumstances (room size 22m2 and couch place to the wall) to find the best rear speaker solution for me. I think a pair of used BL are fine.

Option 1: Pair of BL6000 placed left and right of the couch, fixed will wall brackets (I do not think it is working pretty good, because they will point toward the BL9 and not toward the listener.

Option 2: As above, but fixed with wall brackets not at the rear wall, but on the side, pointing towards listener (also not pretty good, because one speaker round 3m away, other speaker only round 30cm).

Option 3: Pair of BL4000 placed on the wall behind the couch (do not think it will work, because my head will be to close.

Option 4: Pair of BL4 (even worser the BL4000 because BL4 incl. wall bracket will point round 30cm into the room, BL4000 only round 12cm).

Option 5. Pair of BL3 paced left and right on the litte phone furniture and CD-rack or fixed with wall brackets (original B&O or better stbbrackets).

Options, option. I`m struggeling with position, size of speaker, ALT + non ALT.

Any B&O addicted also having the same problems? Buy the way, keep in mind, I will not buy new furniture to optimize my "living situation" in the room.

    Take care.

You could fix the BL8000 on a wall bracket and angle the speakers towards

    your listening area

I have all 4 on a wall but 2 angled

As i also use them in my setup, i think a pair of BL4000's will be perfect. Far more versatile and since they will be wall mounted, the bass will be excellent. But since the couch is directly attached to the wall, i would have mouted them firing down towards your sweet spot.

    Like that:

    Hi,

i think that's a "no brainer" ... option no.5 is the way to go ... the ALT of the BL3 will serve you best as a rear.

The BL4000 wall mounted looks like a mailbox to me ... sorry.

    Rookie,

why not? If they were only black or gold. But red and also placed "wrong" side, I think they look like a little artwork. I like if somebody use things the other way, not as everybody. Good job Dr.redBL4000.

Hahahaha. Sorry if i was misinterpreted. Although i like red, my BL4000's are the classic alu with Black frets. I posted the picture to give an impression of a down firing BL 4000's pair. Not to hint you on the color selection. Big Smile Sorry for that. But if we want a more professional opinion on color for your setup Hotknife, when you decide the speakers than we can ask my SWMBO, who is an interior designer. Wink
