    B&O and 3D development

    Hi all,

Apparently, the expectation is that 3D technology will start to take off in 2011 as more and more brands bringing out 3D models. Toshiba will introduce the first LCD screen with 3D technology which doesn't require the viewer to wear glasses to experience the 3D effect at the CES in Las Vegas coming January.

Is there anything known where B&o stands with the 3D development in the tv market? Is there anything in the pipeline?

I haven't checked this forum for over a half a year, so I might have missed some threads regarding 3D.

    Cheers,

    R.

    Re: B&O and 3D development

Marketing of all TV brands wants you to believe that the 3D will take off in 2011.

Facts are here : there is fewer people now in 3D theaters than in beginning 2010.
Have you seen 2 movies that really would make you buy a 3DTV set? I'm not a 3D-hater, I'm really found of 3D for videogames, but it makes me sick very quickly.

Wait for the content to be interesting (TV channels are like everyone : they just finished to invest massively in HD, and now that this worked perfectly for TV industry, they want to push a new technology that will make your stuff old-fashioned), then wait 10 or 20 years... Then B&O will have a product for youWink

Don't listen to marketing, just look and listen.

    Hi mbee,

    Thanks for your reply.

I guess time will learn if 3D takes off or not. The succes of it will in my view also depend on the supply that comes out of Hollywood. Fact is that according to a retail study in some countries, the consumer interest for 3D television increased in comparison to the "non" 3D models.

In any case, I know there are some people here on the forum which are close to the company, so I was just wondering if they could give some "inside" info.

I do remember that when the new B&O CEO took charge, he mentioned that the company should react faster to new technological developments when they appear to be there for the long haul, hence my post.

    Re: B&O and 3D development

The fact is that 3D is not a new technolog, its :

    -A good old 200Hz panel
-The electronic which can display 2 images (Left/Right) at a 200Hz refresh rate (100Hz for each eye)
-An IR emitter synchronised with the panel in order to synchronise the glasses.

So, adding 3D capability to a recent TV can almost be resumed in adding an IR emitter and providing some (well designed) glasses. B&O can do that tomorrow at no cost (for them, not for the final consumer) if they want to. They just have to call David Lewis or Anders Ermansen to design the first wearable set of 3D glasses.

If you have tested passive technology, it's a little more work on the panel (adding a way to polarize raws of pixels), and more simple glasses. In fact, a lot of people (me included) really prefer the passive technology (refresh rate conserved, no flickering, light inexpensive glasses for everyone...), but again, marketing wants you to think that it's not the good solution, as it's really more complicated to build.

It's really interesting to see that Loewe (call it whatever you want, but it's the closest brand to B&O) has also not jumped on the 3D train... Usually they adopt new technology way before B&O : they are now investing massively on HbbTV (THIS seems to be a really interesting technology), and no sign of a 3D TV.

    Re: B&O and 3D development

Well, B&O can NOT include 3D at an easy way. At first, the Beosystem 3 has to be upgraded to support HDMI 1.4-protocol. Today it support HDMI 1.1.

Second: 3D uses much more power in the picture-processing than 2D. The Beosystem 3 has to be modified in power also.

So B&O has to do alot of things with their hardware before they can implement 3D in their Televisions.

    B&O have already developed two 3D TV's.

80 Inch and 103 inch - as I understand it they won't be doing any smaller models as the effect is lost on smaller screen sizes.

    Beovision 7 55 with BluRay, Beolab 9's, Beosound 8, Penta 3's, Overture, Beocom 2, Beo 6 Remote

I've no interest in sport and that includes football BUT I'm led to believe that football, as an example, is particularly impressive in 3D. In the UK, the broadcasting of football in both SD and HD has been a great earner for the Sky network. Now with football being broadcast in 3D, who knows?

To be fair, I suspect that Panasonic actually developed the 3DTV that B&O are using as the basis for their new 3DTV's.

Maybe so at the moment, but like any new medium it has to mature. Personally I will choose a 3d showing over the 2d equivelent every time now!

    Re: B&O and 3D development

I've been selling B&O through several waves of new technology. High definition TV, flat panels, and iPods are the big ones so far. In every case, customers responded to the zeitgeist and came to B&O with the desire to see "our take" on things. They were generally enthusiastic and were eager to adopt the technology. It was just a matter of our serving up the right product.

With 3D it's been very different. Very few people ask about it, indicating to me that despite an extraordinary marketing push to get people talking, there's no real interest. Furthermore, when they do ask about it it's more like, "Do I have to do this? Is there a way around it?"

I think there are so many more things that are important to a good TV experience than 3D and at this point there's very little to watch. Add to that the cost of glasses, which can top $400us per pair.

There is scarcely anything in this world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey. - John Ruskin

I like 3D in a cinema (although it makes me sick), but on a TV, I am not convinced... however, people won't understand why you have to pay 5 times the price of a kikinoko TV and not get all the features...

3D is far from being a real advantage along as you need to wear these googles. It is a marketing hype so far no real benefit for consumers.

Tell me 'Trip', as a matter of interest, are there any 3D TV channels in the States?

In the UK there are and this could have an affect upon its eventual take-up by consumers, just as HD TV channels have helped accelerate the adoption of HD TVs. The subscription based Sky sports channels are very popular in the UK and sports fans have enthusiastically embraced (and paid for) the broadcasts in HD. Now they are broadcasting in 3D, many fans may be very tempted.

    Re: B&O and 3D development

I'm going to be blunt here, it will be pornography that will make it mainstream.  If you look at the development of Video, DVD, Internet Media, it was the porn industry that made these things common and I suspect that 3D will go mainstream when some company starts chucking out LCD panels for your computer and the costs plummet.

Of course ther may be other factors at play; sports will bring down the costs of the cameras and it might be gaming that makes the TV producers jump on the bandwaggon but it wil be pornography that gets the panel costs into the mainstream price bracket

For me it is a nice gimmick, that's all.

Seen it, found it impressive, but that's all.

I would try (a little bit) to compare it with DD and DTS and sorts of that. It is a nice feature which you use with movies. But for daily use I can't see the benefit.

For the use of the sound (DD an DTS) options you need more speakers of a certain quality to experience the best of it. For 3D I think you need a much larger screen than the average 42 inch used at the moment to make the most out of it.

Add that to the fact that there isn't a standard for 3D at the moment, and I'll wait and see. I can't see the urge to implement it on short base.

There are more examples from the past (CDi, DCC etc) that didn't make it.

About the 3D. The methode used with 2 pictures on left and rightside of the panel doesn't give you the full benefit of your screenresolution and/or full picture. The 3D demo broadcastchannels doesn't give you the same picture (in size) as the 2D broadcasts.

    Re: B&O and 3D development

LOL same here Big Smile. I still have my "good old" Avant with DVD player and very content with it!. But for about a year now, I have been contemplating to buy the BV10 46" and BluRay. I imagine it would be like upgrading from a VW Beetle to a Porsche Turbo.

But as a Marvel and Bruce Lee fan, I wouldn't mind to wait for 3D to be introduced to the BV10, hopefully. I just can't wait to see Bruce Lee kicking ass in 3D!
