The title says it all.

I got a white Beogram 4002 whose bearing has considerable play in it.

What I don't understand is that there is no visible wear anywhere.

Could it be that something is missing? It looks exactly like the picture shown on this post. There is no oil or grease inside.

Any ideas?

It will almost always wobble a bit if dry.
Try adding a little grease.

It's not very critical.
I don't remember what the manual prescribes but I use a standard ball-bearing type
with a not too high viscosity and not too runny either.

Well then it's not a bit wobbly. I'd say the play is not far from 1mm side to side. The problem seems to reside at the bottom of the bearing, where there's nothing to hold it it seems!

I suggest you try the grease.

PS. I'm getting accustomed to the MC120.2, as the sound now seem to be better, (?)with a bit more of everything. Piano is delightful, as voices are!

Caps run-in period? Do you believe in this?

The manual prescribes Esso Nuto H43 Hydraulic oil which is no more viscous than SAE 40 engine oil and certainly not as viscous as any grease that I am used to.

My main concern is that the bearing is not held at its bottom. Do I miss something? Adding oil or grease doesn't make any difference. The play just seems excessive. What is wrong then? The lower part of the shaft is allowed to move freely and it shouldn't be so, should it?

For what it's worth, every single deck of this type I've seen had a wobbly platter bearing.

So it's a particular design then.

Maybe the platter weight along with the belt tension compensate the play somehow... Odd design! The elasticity of that belt must be very critical.

It's a bronze bearing so anything from SAE30 and up should be fine.
SAE30 or similar oil is good if you can press it into the pores of the sintered bearing
material but that is a process that most people cannot do at the kitchen table
so I normally recommend a not-too-thick-grease. That's far easier to handle without
making a mess, it stays where it is put and it works fine.

Yes, they are all a bit wobbly, even more so if dry. It should not wobble around when rotating
by itself or when driven by the motor but it will almost always wobble a bit if
the platter is pressed with your fingers.

In any case, I haven't noticed it causing any ill effects on my decks - the platter seems to run completely stable anyway. They don't have much grease left either.

I have noticed the AC motor bearing (at least in my 4000) is a much higher tolerance! However as others have said while there is play in the bearing it is unoticable when the platter sits on top and you use the player. As long as the platter sits level then all should be well.

You will have to tell us what you think of your new deck when set up :)

Right then. 

When I press Play the platter turns but when I release the button it stops. Nothing else happens. Ah yes if I press play and keep it that way I can select 45 rpm.

Check that the servo belt is still in place and not slipping under the right hand panel.

Thanks. The belt is in place and the carriage motor doesn't turn at all (no voltage arrives at it either).

There is 5v at IL1 but I can't see any light. Should I see some?

The servo motor should start rotating when you press START (or PLAY as the lettering says on some decks).
If it doesn't, you will have to find out why.
Check for cracked solder joints at the main board edge connectors.
Check the power supplied to the main board.

The platter should start rotating and the carriage should start moving left.
No clicks.

First click will be from either the solenoid lowering the tonearm (in the case
of a 12 inch record) or the speed switching relay (in case a 7 inch
record (or no record) is found).

My 6000 clicks, which I think is the end stop microswitch deactivating!
