Re: Hope one of us got .......
Chris,
I actually tried to bid quite a bit higher than the winning bid. Although I'd asked the seller about international shipping (as had a few others), he was happy to ship but when I came to bid, I had the message that I didn't meet the criteria set by the seller bumph and had to apply to be approved to bid beforehand. By then it was too late so I missed out. This irritating message only comes up after you try to bid - it does prevent snipers like me but also leads to sellers not achieving the maximum price for their goods. I hope the new owner enjoys it. This seems to be happening quite a bit recently even when sellers say they will ship abroad.
Dave.

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I'm guessing in this instance the seller put it up for UK only and if anyone outside of the UK wanted to bid the seller has to approve the bid. Sniping will be no good if this is the case. They didn't prevent sniping but late bids won't really work for non uk residents.
If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.

How do you do this? Several items I have listed as UK only in the past. By setting the postage as UK only. It has never stopped bids from outside the UK been placed.

In the shipping section of the auction form you'll see 'Exclude Shipping Locations'. If you go here you can exclude regions (e.g. Asia) or specific counties. Selecting this option will have the effect of blocking bids from people in these regions/countries.

There also an option to block buyers here:
My Ebay/Account(tab)/Site Preferences/Buyer Requirements/Buyers in locations to which I don't ship

Re: Hope one of us got .......
Some people have a dislike for snipers and feel it is unfair to people who have bid throughout the auction. Anyone is free to do it though and I must admit that if I'm really interested in an item, I won't bid (show my hand so to say) until the end. Bidding early can push the price up early on which is in the sellers interest but not mine as a buyer. Snipers also get sniped as I have on many occassions. It's frustrating but all part of 'the game' as Martin (Dillen) would say.
I understand about wanting to exclude people from some countries from bidding - Nigeria for example. But when someone during the bidding agrees to sell abroad, it would make sense for them to change the listing or buyers conditions. This seller could have made at least 50 GBP more for this Beomaster 800 as my highest bid was 224 GBP and I think that probably would have been bettered by another collector.

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I was lucky enough to win of these earlier in the year when it was listed with a BIN of £85. It really is a stunning set. The right hand internal speaker distorts but I couldn't complain at the price. I am not really sure why a bemaster 900 looks so much better with extra aluminium at either end but it does!

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I was amazed to read just how many units one Beoworlder has in his collection. It all looks very collectable and worth restoring but i am curious not as to how many units members have but what is the average size of these collections ? I did get a beomaster 1200 which needs work but I do have a background (historically)in electronics so it should be interesting for me to see if i am still up to it!
Eddie
P.s. How do you get all these systems past the Beo-widow

Re: Hope one of us got .......
My wife encouraged me - I did get to over 100 items but have got rid of almost all of it. I decided one day that I no longer needed them and others would be happier than me to own them. I kept the few bits I really wanted though.

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I'm another eBayer who tends to snipe. The risk with a rare or desirable item is that several people will snipe at the same time. The winning bid then becomes a complete lottery. I've seen items at around £50 with seconds to go suddenly leap to prices like £205, which can only mean that one sniper has bid £200 to be sure of wiping out the competition, and a second sniper has done something similar at say £250, becoming the winning bidder at £205. You just need to be sure that you are happy to part with your high blanket bid if someone else is adopting the same strategy. In this sort of case sometimes you'll be paying at the £205 level, other times just £51. It's not really an auction though, more a gamble.
On the question of collections, didn't Martin (Dillen) once post a picture of what looked like dozens of beomasters wrapped and stacked-up waiting for a future service?

That would've been his Beomaster 1000 collection
I keep a list and it seems I'm at about 70 items now (with all the stack system components etc. counted separately). I have them spread around at several locations including the work, the GF's place and some friends as well... can't really display that much in this doghouse I'm living in. It's slowing down now that I actually almost have all the pieces I'd like to have.
The most popular auction site in Finland doesn't accomodate sniping, as it always extends the time to five minutes after the last bid. Sometimes I like that, sometimes I don't - some people have an annoying habit of waiting to the last seconds anyway, and you may need to wait for an hour overtime for the auction to finish, while being the winning bidder all that time...

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I cant get my hands on a Beolink 1000 to save my life - always get outsniped. I place my bid usually in the final 20 seconds or so but not always. I have won auctions where I had a bid set out for a day or two.
I always evaluate the item and set a fixed price I am willing to pay and stick to it. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. Doesnt bother me in the least when I get outbid in the final second or two. I havent counted bot I guess I am around 30 -40 pieces now. Started "farming out" pieces a few months ago to local dance companies. The most recent was a BC 7000 I just finished refurbishing a week ago to Coco Loupe Dance Co.
I hated parting with those red clothed red lines but they were no longer being used and taking up to much space. She loves it. Beats trying to choreograph to a set of computer speakers or a cheap boombox.

20 secs is probably why you get out bid - I watch until 8 seconds (sweating and pulse racing :) ) then go for it. I do have a good connection that is very reliable but that pause after confirmation is a heart-stopping moment! I know it will fail me one day!

Nah I need the extra few seconds to make up my mind if I want to place the bid. I pass on a lot of stuff. Sometimes happily but occisionally with regret. My worst experience was I thought for certain I had won a white BM 2000 (70's version) high bidder with 2 seconds left only to get outbid. I was devasteated cause I had passed on a BM 1000 in the same group moments before that I could have easily won based on my max set bid. So I basically lost out twice,

Re: Hope one of us got .......
I think that could be considered getting caught in auction fever, which in my book is bad news. For me I set an amount and if it goes for more I do NOT punish myself because even if I had placed a higher bid the other party will have mostly outbid me again!
It is worse in auction rooms because there is no clock! - I recently saw a 9500, matching beogram and RL60's. I wanted these badly but due to the condition I was only prepared to pay £100 (they were not in a great state and needed a lot of work!) - I watched two people bid up to £150, and all along I was trying to justify that extra bid - very hard to resist!

Re: Hope one of us got .......
Sometimes I j watch the final 2 minutes of an auction just for fun to see how many bids get placed and how high an item sells for. I saw a Beogram CDX that was broken go for over 200 recently. I paid 85 for mine and it works.
Ya just never know what people will pay for stuff = its acrap shoot at best. I think the silliest bidding is for used needles. I have bought whole decks with the needle for less than half the final auction price or just the needle. Sometimes going for more than a new soundsmith replacement.

Imagina the cost of shipping a broken TV from Finland to the USA in order to obtain a working Beolink 1000.
