Meet my new best friend Old English.  Thanks to my wife for the tip, who says her mother swears by this stuff.

Also, Goof Off wipes did a great job of getting the odd splash of stain off the M70 metal trim.

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

Since Friday night I've been doing quite a bit of listening to the Stereophile Test CD 3 since I brought my NAD 7175PE receiver out of the garage and hooked it up to the second pair of M70s.  A few of the tracks on the Stereophile disc revealed some issues with one of the speakers of pair 2 (somewhere in the treble).  A bunch of listening and shuffling later (and long story short), I'm back to having the original refurbished pair out.  I also stained a rather large IKEA pine shelving unit to house the Frankenbeosystem.

The M70s sound fantastic playing all sources through the NAD receiver.  Tomorrow I should be receiving some different sized spikes to experiment with the tilt of the M70s.  Right now they are level.  I would like to try them with a small upward tilt.

Next weekend I will be visiting Jaff-Bay to try to upgrade the Frankenbeosystem.

Perhaps some day I will let this thread die.

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

More spikes in the mail yesterday.  The current setup is 4 of the medium size on the bottom of the stand, and 4 of the medium size on the top of the stand.  The three installed heights of the spikes are:

    Small:  1.3 cm (1/2")

    Medium:  1.7 cm (11/16")

    Large:  3.3 cm (1 5/16")

The front to back distance between spikes is 12.5 cm (5").  Using short and long, I would have an upward tilt of about 9.1 degrees.  Using medium and long, I would have an upward tilt of about 7.3 degrees.  Using short and medium, I would have an upward tilt of 1.8 degrees.

If I were to adjust the spikes such that they weren't necessarily screwed all the way down to the top of the speaker stand, there is a full range of tilt available from 0 to about 11 degrees or so.

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

Here's the 9.1 degree tilt with the small spikes in the back and the large spikes in the front.  There isn't quite enough space to fit an adult hand under the speaker at the back/small spikes!  Beware the hand crush!

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

I thought the 7.3 degree medium/large was probably too much tilt, but I went ahead and setup both M70s in that configuration and did some listening to the Stereophile Test CD 3.  I think I did notice a bit more clarity with cymbals/high hats, but there was a bit of bass distortion in the right channel in the Herbie Hancock/Stanley Clarke track.

I'm going to leave the M70s in this configuration for the rest of the week and do more tweaking when I get back from my visit to Jaff-Bay.

You know what I hate?  When I come home from a hard day at the office after goofing off at work with the Wednesday Thread (c), and my M70s have fallen backward against the wall.

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

So, imagine James Cagney saying the following:

"O.K.  Who did it?  Who did it?  Who threw my palm tree overboard?  Who knocked my M70s back against the wall?"

I figure neither the 3 1/2 year-old (the phase link destroyer) or 4 1/2 year-old did it, because they were at day care and walked into the house with me.  Obviously the Fabric Selector didn't do it.

Well, that leaves the cat, Floyd.  (And no, he's not named after "Pink," he's named after Brad Pitt's character in True Romance.)

    So, 7.3 degrees bad.

    We try 1.8 degrees next.

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

Yesterday I setup the new toys.  This evening I did some listening.

All of Jethro Tull Aqualung LP (original issue, used, unknown origin, a little warped actually).

All of Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? 180 gram LP 2010 reissue.

Most of Pink Floyd The Wall CD.

Some of Don Henley's End of the Innocence LP (original issue, I'm the original owner).

Especially while listening to Jimi Hendrix, I was blown away.  I told the Fabric Selector, "This is going to sound lame or corny or something, but the sound was so incredible, I was almost moved to tears a few times."

She looked at me like someone who just doesn't understand and said, "Yeah, that is lame."

Oh well, at least she let me go up to JaffBay.

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

Tonight I got out the four pairs of Beovoxes I've refurbished in the last year and listened to each on the BM 4000 from JaffBay.  So, faceoff among:

    • Beovox M70:  new capacitors and resistors in crossover, complete rewiring, new damping material, new gasket for back, new fret cloth, custom stands
    • Beovox S45-2:  new capacitors in crossover, complete rewiring, new damping material, new fret cloth, improvised stands
    • Beovox S40:  new capacitors in crossover, refoamed woofer, rewiring limited to new terminal cup, new damping material, improvised stands
    • Beovox CX50:  new capacitor in crossover, refoamed woofer, rewiring limited to new terminal cup, placed on floor

Source material was limited to playing just a few songs from my iPod ("What a Fool Believes," "The Fool on the Hill," "Why Do Falls in Love," "Chain of Fools," and "Ship of Fools").

The surprise winner is pictured below.

Of course I was kidding.  I had the M70s out in the garage giving them their final finish.  I used Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.  I was using the CX50s temporarily while I was checking LP holes.  (But that's another story for another thread.)

After waxing different angle, now inside.

The photographs don't show very well how the waxing made the darker one a little lighter, and the lighter one a little darker.  The waxing definitely made the pair a closer match.  So, mission accomplished.

Rich and everyone on this thread Thank You so much for the inspiration to attempt a fixup on a pair of M 70s I rescued from the town dump free shop.    The foam rings on the 10" woofers have a few cracks and the domes on the 5" are depressed.  Also a bad tear like on the cone may need a glue job.  .   Where is the best source for the 10" foam or rubber rings?

    Thanks, Mike

Re: Beovox M70 Rescue & Adoption

Welcome to Beoworld!  Good luck with your project.

There are many sources of replacement foam.  I've used Woofer Repair for CX50s and S40s, but not M70s.  My two pairs of M70s both have rubber surrounds on the woofers.

Where are you located?  Whether you're in the US, Europe, or elsewhere, will probably determine where you will source your repair materials.

Post some pictures, those always help those who will try to help you.

I have never seen foam rings on the M70's...Surprise Are You sure it's the original woofers..? Hmm
The later M75's did have the foam-rings.
