    CX100 - refurbishment really helpful?

Yesterday I rediscovered a long forgotten pair of CX100. Not used for years, but I remember they did not sound that bad.

But yesterday they did sound awful, really horrible. Was my memory wrong (i.e. do I just not like these speakers at all) or do they just need to be refurbished? So I have three questions for you all:

    1. There is some foam rot, but not much at all, just a little really: is such a small amount of foam rot enough to cause such a dramatic sound deterioration? Will they sound really better if I replace the rings?

    2. Are there any capacitors that typically need to be replaced as well in order to improve the sound? Is there a kit available somewhere?

    3. In your view, are CX100 worth the refurbishment cost/efforts?

    Thanks, js

The CX100 are a perfectly competent small speaker and definitely shouldn't sound horrible so something must be wrong!

There is a single capacitor in each speaker. Martin (Dillen) can provide suitable replacements.

Foam rings from Good_hifi on ebay - 4 rings usually less than 20€ inc p&p - takes a little time, the major bit being finding suitable rings to hold the foam ones down! - about 4 hours total over 2 - 3 days

CX are intended to be placed close to a wall (wall mounted) or even close to/in a corner !
    - if placed "freestanding" the are sounding "thin"

If you don't want to refoam them you can get replacement speakers and a set gaskets from B&O:

    2x 8480188  Speaker Woofer 6 ohm 4"" al-coil
    2x 8480187  Woofer 6 ohm 4"" al-coil
    2x 3340250  Set of Gaskets CX 100

Total costs approx EUR 140 for 2 woofers - type "upper position" + 2 woofers - type "lower position"
and a set of foam gaskests

If bass is missing, there are probably holes in the old foam surrounds.

Absolutely true - CX must be airtight (infinite baffle principle) - otherwise the bass will be "short-circuited"

OP may not care, but I for one also think it's fun to refurbish speakers.  If the sound isn't improved, hopefully there will be lessons learned that can be applied to the next project.

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

Replaced the rings on about 6 pairs of CX100's now, and never had a problem. Also done other B&O speakers too. One thing I have found that works well to make sure everything is aligned. Is once I have glued the new ring to the cone of the speaker, and it has dried. Connect a 1.5 volt battery to the speaker so it pulls the coil in. Then hold the ring to the frame with pegs. This usually lines the coil up first time.

I used suitably sized coffee mugs for the inner edges, then  lots of clothes pegs for the outer edges!

Go buy a bottle of Bowmore - cut the carton to rings and they are just the right size for the outer edges Whistle

Don't blame me if they have changed the diameter since... in that case you might just need to drink it and junk the carton...

How do you connect the 1.5V battery once you have de-soldered and removed the drivers?

    Thanks, js
