    AST - Verständnisfrage

    Hallo,

Hi. I'm the guy behind AST at B&O in the acoustics department at B&O in Struer. I don't speak/write German well enough to respond to questions or problems in this forum in German, but I will be happy to answer questions about AST (the philosophy, what to expect from it, and setup issues) if I can.

    Cheers

    Hi Geoff,

Very nice to meet a B&O employee here who brings in his knowledge. Thank you a lot for your availability.

My question was very general about the AST. I learned so far that it just works with a Beosystem 3 powered setup (sad for me who owns a BV8). I also learned that I can make different sound preferences according where I am and what source I listen to. And I need 4 speakers (without center).  Correct so far?

Next question is: who does the system detect where I am? Do I have to change manually the position (like I can do with Speaker 2 or Speaker 3) or is it done depending on where the IR Signal comes from?

My problem with the current setup is that I use Speaker 2 for Audio and Speaker 3 for Video. The sound setting is based on the video needs.  BL3 (Right) is around 3,5m from listening position - and BL3(left)  around 6,5m). BV8 is also 3.5m away. Works well. But when listening Audio on Speaker 2 I have another position quite in the middle to more oriented against BL3 (left). Would AST help here? I guess that is what is was made for?

Thanks and have a nice day.

Almost. You can create a numebr of different "Presets." When you create a preset you define the following:

    - AST On or Off

    - Which loudspeakers are playing

    - The location of your listening position

    - The direction you are facing (called "rotation" in the Preset)

    - The name of the Preset

AST can be turned on with as few as three loudspeakers, however, I would personally recommend that you use at least 4. Of course, the more loudspeakers you have, the better the spatial resolution of the system. You can have up to 7 "main" loudspeakers + 2 subwoofers running in an AST Preset. Those 9 loudspeakers can be chosen from the 14 outputs of the BeoSystem3.

Next question is: who does the system detect where I am? Do I have to change manually the position (like I can do with Speaker 2 or Speaker 3) or is it done depending on where the IR Signal comes from?

When you create a preset, the system will "ask" you to put in the distances from the listening position you've chosen to 3 of the loudspeakers. From these three measurements, it triangulates your listening position and "knows" where you are. Then, when you change Presets (manually, using the Beo5) you are changing the listening position to that which you have set.

My problem with the current setup is that I use Speaker 2 for Audio and Speaker 3 for Video. If I read this correctly, you have 3 front loudspeakers and no surrounds. In this case, I would say that AST will probably not help you. If you have surround loudspeakers, then AST might give you an improvement. Your loudspeaker configuration seems quite asymmetrical - and this is the kind of setup where AST helps most. However, you will need to be surrounded by loudspeakers for it to really work effectively.

I hope that this helps. If you need further info, please feel free to ask!

    cheers

    Hi Geoff,

    Understood (hopefully):

    • BEO5 needed to use AST.
    • Presets can be configured in BEO5 and need to be selected when moving in hte room.
    • Just for BS3 based TVs. Is there any plan to bring it down to BV8 in the next years (e.g. by using a small "AST-Box" or better a SW Update?

Thanks and have a nice weekend

    Hi Heribert

Sorry, but I don't have an answer to this question. Firstly, I honestly don't know the answer. Secondly, if I did, I wouldn't be able to tell you.

David

    Re: AST - Verständnisfrage

Da ist jetzt ein Fachmann gefragt. Ich habe einen im April 2010 gekauften BV7-40 MKIV Bluray mit Beolab 7-1, Beolab 2, Beolab 8000 Front und Beolab 2500 Rear angeschlossen. AST geht definitiv.
