BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

    Hello everyone.

I'm getting a BeoCenter 9500 in a few days ( hopefully ) and i noticed it has an ampiflier so i can connect non-B&O speakers. I would like to connect my 15 year old custom made speakers that sound amazing. The problem is, that i have no idea how powerful they are, and if the BeoCenter 9500 will be able to handle them. As far as i've read it has 2x80W. But i'm afraid that won't be enough.

They are about a meter or so high and about 50-60cm wide. Sadly, that's everything i know, since they have no info on them. They are currently connected to a Sony TA-F555ESII ampiflier ( link: http://www.thevintageknob.org/SONY/sonyes/TAF555ES/TAF555ES555ESII.html ) and they work great. Since i'm no techno wizz, i hope someone could help me with this. I know it may be hard, since i have no technical details on speakers, but still. I'm more than happy to provide any additional info, if i can. Thanks in advance.

PS. the hyperlink button doesn't seem to work on Safari - it's just gray and unclickable. Is it possible i'm doing something wrong? also when you click preview, the text disappears and the smilies don't work :)

Looking at your old amp and the specifications, you should be ok.

You do have to bear in mind that a Japanese power amp tends to be seriously optimistic and you might even find that your Beocentre 9500 is at least as powerful as your old Sony.

I could tell you a few stories about just how optimistic the Japanese power ratings can be.

i was about the say same thing about optimistic powers.... heh.

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

At the moment I use my B&W P5 floorstanding speakers together with my Beocenter 9000 (which should be less powerfull than the BC9500) and it works just great. Plenty of control of the speaker, and at a party last weekend it could easily play very loud...

In time, I will connect the BC9000 with a pair of RL6000 (when i get them wall mounted). By the way, have anyone seen Dillen (Martin)? I have a question about the capacitators of the cross-over of the RLs.

    best regards

you should just try it out. i'm sure you won't be disappointed for bc9500 anyway...

Will do and i'll tell you how it goes. And i am sure it will be spectacular, playing or just sitting there : )

If it doesn't work by some strange coincidence, is there a way to connect the 9500 to my Sony amp? Or what are the other options?

I would rate the 9500 as about 40W RMS a channel. Good if not spectacular amplifier. If you need more, use a Powerlink socket and a power amplifier - the Quad 405 is recommended by Graham and will not break the bank. Or get a pair of Beolab 200 amplifiers which will do much the same but will break the bank!Laughing

By the way, to insert a link, write something like Beocentral , highlight it and then press the link button and put in the URL.

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

I am pretty shure that the beocenter 9500 has RCA line-out for that same purpose. I know my BC9000 does. Just connect it with a pair of RCA cables to line in (aux) of your Sony amp.

I suppose you could get a powerlink to RCA converter, if you prefer to use the Powerlink. As Beotech.co.uk i can't check with the spare parts list.

I don't think the 9500 has RCA sockets unfortunately - mine doesn't anyway. There is a pre-amp out which is a DIN socket but using this disconnects the power amp all together which could be a disadvantage.

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

Peter is quite correct. The only model with RCA pre amp out sockets is the BC9000. With the 9500 you will have to use the powerlink socket and make up a special lead.

The din socket that Peter says that the 9500 has was designed for a graphic equaliser (in/out) and is not volume controlled.

You will have to make up a lead for the powerlink socket I'm afraid.

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

Graham, am I mis-remembering or was it so that the 9500 merely attenuated the amplifier signal down for the "pre-amp" out -- in contrast to the earlier 9000 which actually gave you the original signal?

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

I think that is the 5500 - just had a look at the diagrams for the 9500 - I confess to being useless at doing this - and the line in and out is before the power amplifiers and so is not attenuated output. It seems to be, as has been stated, before the tone controls as well.

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

Correct Peter. Makes sense as well. The din socket takes it's  signal before the volume and tone controls, out to a graphic equaliser and back in so you can then control the volume from the front panel of the 9500.

Hey Gorissek...Whatever did you determine about the ability of the 9500 to drive your speakers???   I picked up a 9500 and am re-furbing it now, i'd love to hear your comparison to your Sony amp...

    THanks,

Re: BeoCenter 9500 with custom speakers - powerful enough?

I had a look at the driver configuration Gorissek is using and it's one I've had experience with. The bass should stay fairly well controlled, I was driving the same cones with a 35 wpch Rotel amp and it sounded beautiful up until medium-high volumes, at which point the mids really began to yelp and screech.

Of course, this isn't taking into account the differences between the damping factor from the cabinet design on the actual driver and the resistance caused by venting or sealed enclosures, but it's a pretty basic guide. The amplifier in the 9500 actually seems rather good, although if you really want a bigger pair of speakers to sing well, you need something more meaty like a BeoMaster 6500/7000 or 6000/8000 or even a 4000/4400/5000.

    THanks,

    Hi Frank!

I didn't get the 9500, because it turned out to be a scam. I have learned my lesson, and bought a 9300 from Lifestyle AV ( very satisfied! ) this time and it just arrived today. I will move it to the house on Friday, when I get the cables for the speakers. If you are still interested, I will let you know how they sound then. And if you have already connected your speakers to the 9500, I would love to hear your experience.

No, I'll try to connect it to the 9300 only and I hope I won't have to use the Sony amp. It will look better and be easier to use. Will tell you it goes.

I've connected it last week, but I just didn't get around to type something about it. So here it is.

I've plugged it directly to the speakers, without the Sony amp. It looks way better on its own there and it sounds just as good. Well, at first I thought the Sony combination sounded a bit richer, crispier ( or something like that ), but I played around with the bass and treble settings a bit and adjusted them like they were on the Sony and I must say it really sounds just as good, if not better.

It can easily play very loud, very clear, so I see no problems at all. That's it basically. I'm very satisfied and If you have any questions I'll be glad to answer them, but right now I'll just sit back and enjoy the music : )
