BL7000 touch panel replacement and fault

    Hi all,

Sometime ago I sourced a BL7000 from a fellow BeoWorlder. While not in horrible shape, the lower mirrored touch panel was in bad shape with a tell-tale dent right in its center. I say tell-tale as this is exactly where the piezo solders out to PCB1 and reportedly can be the source of lots of problematic issues. Upon arrival, not much was happening with this piece. All I could get was a small red light in the upper panel. Interestingly, the previous owner stated that it was functional in the proximity of a two way system. Hmmm... powered up my BM4500 and viola! There was activity in response from the BM, but nothing stable as it would not hold a charge. First thing was to replace the battery pack. Couple of snips, couple of solders, some charge, and it came to life. I was able to interact with system temporarily, but the BL seemed to have a mind of its own. So, on to replacing the piezo. Below are a few pics...

1.) Battered lower panel with dent in the center.

2.) Here is a shot of PCB1 rotated 180d. You can see the R and B leads in the center.

3.) Another shot (premature -still more screws need to come out) showing that some leverage is required to remove the old panel. A thin paint/putty knife LIGHTLY wiggled in and back and forth helped to separate the plate from the PCB. A bit of a relief that the adhesive on the plate is more of a positioning strength than a fixing strength. It readily pulled away, so the pic perhaps looks more dramatic than it really was.

4.) A close up of the (2) leads penetrating the PCB to the piezo. This proved a real challenge. The temperature of the original solders must have been remarkably high. It was very difficult to get enough heat into the joint for a secure bond.

At this point I reassembled everything and got the BL back on the charger. Fingers crossed... Hey! It works! It looks great! HOORAY!...

...wait a minute! What was THAT! It came back to life in sleep mode... OK, back to sleep, wait... ON AGAIN!!!

Quick perusal thru the manual and I found the exact symptoms in the third entry of Section 2-7... The unit switches back on (6) seconds after having been switched off (when not in charger). Well, I'll be, it is exactly (6) seconds again and again! Sadly the manual has the classic "Module pack X" replacement instructions, nothing more.

Has anyone experienced this fault? There must be a solution beyond replacing the entire module(s).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, experiences, ideas, etc... the BL is SO close to NOT being a paper weight!

Replace the caps on the display board and the one behind the keyboard. The yellow marked ones are responsible for the "ir ... no contact" problem.

It also makes sense to replace the big blue one on the lower board, this one is responsible for the power supply. If you find any white/grey crystals around the "+" pole,  then it's defect. This one is responsible for the on/off problem.

    Martin,

Thanks for the reply! Yes - thumbs up

Remarkably, the (2) way in the remote functions, so I am going to approach this from the bottom -> up.

As this is definitely an ON/OFF problem, I am starting with the blue cap on PCB1. It reads: 680uf -10v +/- 20% and is axial.

    I have found some, but they are physically too big [0.508" Dia x 1.260" H (12.90mm x 32.00mm)] rated @ 20000 Hrs @ 125°C. One that come close in physical size [0.315" Dia x 0.709" H (8.00mm x 18.00mm)] rated 1000 Hrs @ 85°C is not available from my source.

I will keep searching, but I wonder if Dillen might be able to piece a kit together and save me a lot of grief!?!?

    ++++EDIT++++

Found these at Mouser ...any opinions?
