    Beolab 6000 distorted bass

    Hello everybody,

I've been using a pair of beolab 6000 speakers with a beosound 3000 for over 7 years without having any problems or changing the setup in any way.

However, recently, when I turn up the volume just a bit higher then the standard playing volume, the lower sounds seem distorted.

The sounds resembles a sort of resonance, but this isn't the case. Both speakers seem to have got the problem.

    Any thoughts?

    Kind regards.

Slide up the front cloth grilles and gently pop them off,

Then play some music at higher volume, and you should see the bass drivers flapping around like a butterfly in a whirlwind.

It will be the driver rubbers split. You will need four, probably.

Seems to be happening quite a lot to the older ones now - i always check ours as a matter of course.

Agree with Lee. I've just replaced a set and it's not the first I've done.

I must agree.  Whichever engineer had that plonked in his hand to give the seal of approval to obviously didn't go much on aesthetics.

They're push fit connectors on the back too - not even soldered!  In fact, they connect just like cheap car spe.....    hey, hang on!

In common with a number of B&O speakers, the sum of the parts works rather better than the individual items might suggest. The quality of the drive units is however disappointing as the longevity is not that great. The upside is that they are cheap to replace!

Than it should be a nice experiment to exchange all the chassis with real(!) high end speaker chassis!? Perhaps than the Beolabs will blow you away!?

why do they use rubbish drivers??

I had a look at my beocenter1 speakers the other day and yeah wow, really rubbish cardboard and foam... i can't say the same for BL4000 though they seemed like much better quality drivers.

Yes it is a pity with the 6000, and that is what prevents me from buying a pair. I love my BL4000 (first prize a year ago Big Smile ), they really seem a perfect mix of sound, design and built quality.

A friend of mine had the same problem after transporting his 6000. We removed the cloth and we just had to touch the driver and it poped back in place - and that was sorted.

What about the driver units in the Beolab 3500, does they have the same problem?

I think is certainly is the case with these speakers. Yes they are not bad speakers, but... not if you're choosing between them and 4000's. So B&O did make these speakers to a price, but seriously, how much do good drivers cost to use when they are building it from freaking anodised aluminium???
