    BeoSystem 2500 Lights / Lamps / Bulbs / Illumination

Hello!  Newbie here; so please be gentle!  If I'm outta line - or simply ask something which does not belong here - my apologies: simply let me know ...

I have owned a Bang & Olufsen BeoSystem 2500 since they were first sold in the early nineties (it nearly broke me!).  Apart from a few minor troubles along the way, it's been utterly superb and is used daily.  However, the vagaries of time have started to work their evil magic:

Either side of the CD and cassette trays there are (as you'll probably all know already!) 4 bulbs illuminating these areas.  Unfortunately, the one on the right-hand side of the tape-deck has started to flicker (I'm presuming a dry solder joint which I'm looking for right now!) and a second lamp to the left of the cassette area appears to have failed altogether.

Given that these appear to be fed from 6vAC and appear a little out of the ordinary, I was wondering if anyone knew where I might obtain suitable OEM and/or original B&O spares(?).  I'm not averse to having a professional repair if needs be but, given I've been constructing analogue music studio and hi-fi gear for a fair few years now, I thought I'd save myself some monies and effect a repair myself, where possible.  Geeked

Also, some advice: sometimes the glass doors slide open on their own and remain open, with the motor apparently straining, as if it hadn't sensed they were already open.  They will not close by pressing the red standby button on the remote or the red standby button on the unit itself, they merely remove power temporarily from the motor unit (<0.25s) which is audible as a dip in speed and volume.  Only a complete power-down works (the doors close on power-up).  Has anyone else experienced this?  Sometimes, this will repeat itself many, many times and the only answer is for me to leave the power off for a while.  Usually, the doors appear sluggish for a while subsequent to this fault.  My principle concern is damage to the unit, especially the motor, which I've no doubt will prove impossible to source(!).

Finally - and I know this is a long post and a big ask - I have a few (much) less important questions:-

    i)  Where can I obtain replacement speaker grilles / covers from?  Confused

ii)  Where can I obtain a replacement aerial from - my daughter broke this a while back and I couldn't find a replacement then (and B&O were actually quite snooty when I went in to their Birmingham and Shrewsbury stores and asked!)?  Super Angry

iii)  Can the black, rubber sheet containing the buttons on the remote control accompanying the 2500 be replaced (again, my daughter pulled at one - the "Reset" - and tore a quarter of it off!)?  Erm

iv)  I have heard that there was an optional (field-replaceable) RDS module available - around £85 at the time, if my fading memory serves me well - for the radio.  Any ideas where, if anywhere, I could source one from?

    v)  Does anyone know of a reputable and local (West Midlands / Staffordshire / Shropshire ) serivce agent for B&O?

Cheers ... and I'm genuinely sorry for a long first post!  Embarrassed

    Steve.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

    Hi STEVE

That was a lot  to answer but i try.I think you get the bulbs from a radio tv dealer where you live i don't think it needs to be a b&o dealer the problem with your glassdoors are more difficult you have to place the doors in the open state then you can remove them by pulling towards you first from the top then from the bottom they are fastened with two metal pieces that fits into a plastic clip be very carefull when you do so the mechanism that drives the door are very complicated and if you damage  it i doubt that you are able to fix it yourself.then clean the glass both outside and inside with  what we use for cleaning windows, furthermore clean the black plastic piece where the sensor is located.if this do not work your sensor unit and control print needs to be changed or on some 2500 the sensor control print has  bin burnt due to bad soldering.sometimes this can be fixed by a resoldering the print. The rubber sheet can be replaced there are two types one with a menu button and one without remember to get the right one you can get it from your local b&o dealer it's easy to replace remove the eight screws in the bottom of your remote remove the old one and press the new in place about the speaker grills you can buy them by a b&o dealer or if you are handy by some speakerclothes(dont know if it is the right word) and refurbish them

    Kind regards

    Jan

Hi Steve, was it recently that you went to B&O in Birmingham? They were recently reopened and seem far more helpful than in the past.

My life!  Such a rapid deluge of helpful responses!

First off: thank you to all.

Secondly: Jan, I will look into all you mentioned.  Some great advice.  I've actually taken the 2500 apart and thoroghly cleaned dust off very surface (including those between the IR Tx/Rx LEDs) and all seems better ... for now.

As to the key-pad, I'll be popping in to the Birmingham store next week.

In terms of the speaker cloth, I'm managing with a replacement pair of gray covers I bought off eBay many months ago; however, the room they're in is blue and I want the blue ones back.  Given they're in the loft, I may simply try cleaning them ... though I seem to remember a slight tear starting to appear in one of the corners.  I don't suppose anyone out there knows where bright blue speaker cloth might be bought from?

Bulbs: I'll pop along to Maplins and see what they've got in-store ...

Craig, it was at least 18 months ago I popped in to the Brum store ... and promptly gave up!  I will give them a second try under advisement.  Thank you.

    Once again, thank you!

    Steve.

    Cheers,

    Steve.
