    Beocenter 5000 help

    Hi everyone

I'm new to this site and just acquired my first 2 pieces of B&O gear, a Beocenter 5000 with MMC20NE cart with Beovox S55 speakers and stands, and a Beomaster 1001 amp.

Both units seem to function correctly however there are a few cosmetic things I would like to correct, some help/advice would be great.

    1. The beocenter turntable lid wont stay up, it falls down as soon as its been lifted up. Is this a broken or displaced spring? is there a usual symptom for this?

    2. The beocenter 'programming' section aluminium lid dampning hinge has had the sides cracked off it so it no longer sits into the slot in the aluminium lid and frequently seems to cause problems when trying to close the lid, can this be corrected without getting the new hinge? if so, how would I do this?

    3. The turntable runs silently but when the arm is being lifted or cue'd across the record automatically I can hear a slight metallic noise, is this something I need to be concerned about or might need attention? something I can look at myself with some screw drivers and a spare hour or so?

    4. The beocenter turntable lid is quite scratched up, i used an automative 'scratch remover' from Meguires to polish it last night and it has come up better but not great, any suggestions on how to bring this up a bit better?

    5. The Beomaster 1001 is missing the cover which goes over the 3 present FM tuning dials, any idea where I might get one of these from?

So far I am loving the Beocenter connected to my Yamaha NS-300 speakers, I will be sending the Beovox speakers off to a workshop to have the woofers re-coned (they are very faded) and refoamed in the next week or so and hopefully will have the complete system up and running in its former glory soon.

    Re: Beocenter 5000 help

Common problems with units of this age. The turntable return will probably just be the automatic mechanism, which is mechanical, and I wouldn't worry. The spring for the lids are both relatively simple and are a simple torsion wire. Check it has been put together properly - you may need a donor unit - they are a fair number of these around for next to nothing. I am surprised you have not mentioned the cassette deck as the belts in these are almost always in need of replacement!

The lid for the 1001 is also commonly missing - a friend of mine machined up a simialr cover for a 1200 but a black one will be tricky!

    Welcome to Beoworld.

    Re: Beocenter 5000 help

Hey Peter, thanks for your reply.

At this stage the actual components of the Beocenter work quite well. I had a poke around inside last night and everything appears in good order and nice and clean.

The turntable lid has 1 of the 3 hinges cracked, I have repaired with aryldite glue and will add an extra brace to the bracket with some glue tonight and see how it holds up in a day or so (those things are under quite a bit of pressure.

The dampened part which controls the lid for the programming section is quite broken inside, the paddle part which attaches to the lid and into the slide inside the unit is fine, but the slide which it runs along inside the unit has one end broken off so it flops around inside the unit instead of remaining in place... I need to find a new one of these as I think mine is beyond repair, i have removed it for the moment.

If anyone has a source for the replacement part of the programming section hinge I would be greatly appreciative!

    Re: Beocenter 5000 help

Hah peter seems the tape deck did end up needing some attention. it would not fast forward, I ended up disassembling half the mechanism to lube the jockey wheel sprockets which had dried up and were very hard to move, one it was all back in place it works well. Looks like both tape deck and turntable belts have been replaced sometime in the past as the are in quite good condition. I have attached a pic of the unit as it currently stands it needs the following; friction plate for the programming section lid as it has been broken by someone forcing it closed. new spring for the turntable section lid which wont stay up. Aside from that everything seems to work okay now after some cleaning and lubricating. Andrew
