    New, bigger TVs

Hi, I am thinking of upgrading my 7-40 MKIII to a 50" or 65" but since it is a lot of money involved I would like to check with you guys if anyone have heard any rumours of new, bigger TVs ? I know of course the 7-40 MK IV is arriving, but have anyone some information about the bigger models ?

Would really appreciate any hints, rumours and of course best of all - facts... ;-)

    Regards

    Hans

    The expense!

The TV, the new house (estate agents fees, stamp duty, tax etc) or an extension to house it -  I am not sure I have a wall big enough at present!

And now Philips has announced a 21:9 screen ratio for TV's. That's good then, more 'must have' innovations!

Actually I understand that "standard", films are made in that format, not 16:9. So it makes sense to me.

I do understand it also. It looks funny with a flatscreen 16:9 with black bars over and under the picture.

Yes they are, I was just highlighting the fact that just when one level is reached, another comes along which necessitates TV replacement.

Might have helped if 21:9 had been adopted earlier instead of 16:9!

You are right, I for one, never understood the 16:9 format... Movies were never made in this format. I think it was judged upon our eyes field of view... (16:9)

But you know, at some point you have to think of something "new" to keep selling stuff.

Actually, I strongly suspect 16:9 was chosen as it was the halfway point (=compromise) between TV (=4:3, or 12:9 if you like) and Cinema (=2.39:1, or 21:9). So there is some kind of logic there. And, of course, content made recently for TV is 16:9, as are IMAX sections on eg Dark Night Blu-ray.

I've forgotten the actual reason, but believe it had something to do with backwards compatibility in digital video processing - i.e just a technical reason, nothing deeper in there.

Also, the choice was made long before flat panels became a commodity. 16:9 was already a hard aspect ratio to implement for CRTs, wider than that would've been just silly. Since the deflection angle doesn't get any bigger - I believe anything more than 110° was a curiosity - you can think the wide screen CRTs as just larger 4:3 tubes with sections cut off from each horizontal edge. Imagine the depth of a 42" 16:9 CRT, and people commonly have panels larger than that today!

    I also heard about a 7-55. I guess it will be a LCD-screen ?

It would be good to see them come out with a plasma version of the 7-40 and future models but I doubt they would do that as I am sure the picture would look better on that size screen! I am sure cost has a lot to do with it too although I am sure there can't be too much in at when you are buying and manufacturing at their level of business.

What do you guys think about the future ? LCD seems to take over more and more from plasma. If I buy a 4-65, will I be disappointed in a few yeards, not about the size of course, but the choiche of plasma. What is more exactly the differences between LCD and plasma by the way ?

Has anyone seen the 4-65 in action ?

    Halid,

If you consider the 65", i would wait a "little bit". Panasonic has just launched a new model of their 65" with industry-leading specs like 7000 grey-tones, 16 bit video-processing and a contrast-ratio of 60 000:1. A kuro-killer! (but it seems that kuro is going to oblivion anyway)! My guess is that B&O will adopt this panel but I dont know when..

    Re: New, bigger TVs

If you become manufacturer of the best panels in the world (even if by default) would you sell them on to a competitor (albeit in a different market segment) or would you supply them with "last years" model and retain the "best plasma available" moniker for yourselfHmm

I wonder how Panasonic might position themselves if Pioneer do pack in.

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

Our new distribution model makes this a much more likely reality. No more warehouses with aging BeoVisions. Certainly don't know about specific panel choices, but the ability to incorporate OEM innovations quicker was a specific concern for the new CEO.

Trip, interesting comment. If you would make a best guess, how long do you think until we see a new panel in the 50" and 65" ?

There will be a 7-50 (ish) later this year with LED tech for backlighting.  This will also be incorporated (as far as its know at this stage) with the BV10 - unless this goes totally OLED... not decided yet.

There are at least 6+ new products in pipelines currently - not all Bangvisions... so watch this space.

Product development at Struer is now at an unprecedented pace, never seen before.  Focus on quality, innovation and technology.

The image from a good plasma is "warmer" and more natural then from a lcd. Lcd tv's have got "harder" colours, that will look very good on cartoons and games, but they just can't beat plasma on natural images (yet). In the past there was a huge difference in power consumption, but they're now equal.

I saw the 4-65" playing Ice Age on a demo with the Beolab 10, 5 and 9, and it blew me out of the room. Very good sound, combined to the best image you can get. Wonderfull, but also very pricey...
