I share your frustrations, Simon (went through similar 'experiences' recently) - and, of course, one can only agree with Chris mentioning the current sorry state of things ... pitty as I personally like the BS3 a lot!
Still, there's more to the problems according to B&O:
BeoSound 3 cannot play files with embedded covers
Information valid for: BeoSound 3, BeoSound 3 MK II
If you rip a CD in BeoPlayer version 4.65 or higher, the file cannot be played back from an SD card loaded in
BeoSound 3.
When BeoPlayer 4.65 or higher rips a CD, it incorporates the cover with the file via AMG, and when this
information is included in the file on the SD card, it cannot be played on BeoSound 3.
The only solution is to rip a CD without the AMG function - either by using a BeoPlayer version prior to
version 4.65, or by removing the network connection when ripping CDs, or by using a different programme
to rip your CDs.
