    Beogram 4002 speed variance

    Hi,

I have a Beogram 4002 with a platter speed problem - during playback at 33 1/3 it slows down dramatically. I have changed both belts for new ones and cleaned the sub platter and motor spindle to ensure no slipping is happening. When I increase the speed with the trim pot things inprove for a while but eventually things slow down again. Things seem to be ok on 45rpm but 7" singles may not be long enough to show up the problem.

Therefore I assume this is a trim pot issue - does anyone have any expereince of this?

I have removed the trim pot assembly to see if there is any adjustment but the unit appears to be sealed - am I correct?

    Your help is much appreciated,

    Matt

The trimmers on the main board are prone to failure and the symptoms of that are as you describe.

It could also be the motor itself in need of cleaning and lubrication. When playing, try tapping the motor housing gently using f.e. a pencil, if the speed changes the motor will need servicing. This applies mainly to the DC motor versions.

Thanks Martin for your quick reply. I'll try cleaning and lubricating (sowing maching oil okay?) the motor and giving it a tap as you describe over the weekend and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again,

    Matt

Yes, sewing machine oil will be fine. I use a type for avionic instruments but just something that don't contain acid and won't evaporate in two weeks (= NO handyman oil, everyday oil, automobile motor oil, rust losener, WD40 etc.).

Gave the motor a tap as you suggested and it seems okay. That leaves the trim pots - just bought a broken 4002 (for £6.50...) and will swap them over to see if that does the trick.

    Thanks

Swapped the trim pots and all's okay now. Thanks for your interest.

So now all you need to do is restore the broken 4002...

Thanks Martin, could be tricky as the TT arrived without a platter - previous owner making a B&O wall clock?

However, if anyone needs some spares from this turntable for free (just cover P&P), please let me know.

    Hi Matt,

do you have the original DIN connecting lead (ie:- not converted to RCA/phono) complete with the multi plug where it plugs onto the PCB?

    Hi Chris,

Unfortunately the 5 pin DIN to PCB connector has been cut off flush with the TT case. The rectangular 6 pin plug looks okay but the cable is only about 200mm long and cut at one end. You would need to join it - any use?

    Thanks,

    Matt
