I've owned from new a Beocenter 4000 and a Beogram CDX which given years of great service.  I've just been given a Beogram 3000 (type 5901) which I was told played ok. My first problem was that the Beogram 3000 had a five pin connector & the Beocenter 4000 had jack plugs. After a visit to the local B&O shop an adapter cable was bought that had four jack plugs (red, white, black & yellow) I was told to use the red & white plugs & disregard the other 2. Following this advice I duly connected everything up & now have a 'hum' when the phono button on the Beocenter is selected & the 'hum' gets louder as the volume is increased. Can anyone help with this problem?

The ground/earth wire needs to run from the chassis (or any ground point) of the beogram to a same point on the beocenter.

                        I'm pretty confident that earthing is your problem. Simply jam a bared end of a wire between the metal top plate of the beogram & chassis and do something similar with the beomaster and see the result. If it solves the humming then that's your problem a more permanent fix can be done.

hi chris tried the earthing between the deck & amplifier with no differance i disconnected the deck totally pushed the phono button and got the same noise its as if the deck is not connecting to the amp any ideas regards terry

Run a wire from the casing of the DIN plug to a metal part of the beocenter or to a convenient earth point. The Beocenter should have one really but I cannot see one on the manual.

hi peter tried what you suggested the humming has now gone,thanks very much, i am a bit disappointed that such a heath robinson [no disrespect] cure was required. the only thing now is poor sound quality i suspect the stylus is shagged any advice would be gratefully appreciated

The problem with the connection is due to the fact that the Beocenter 4000 was not actually made by B&O but in Japan and hence the odd connections. The Beogram RX had phono plugs to match.

I suspect your diagnosis on the stylus is correct. I suggest Soundsmith is the best option but it is rather expensive.
