my bs9000 makes a high pitched whine when it plays any of the 6 cds , I have checked the playing controls on the back of the unit.Any ideas 

There is a failt noted in some earlier 9000s where the clamper arm can become slightly bent. This results in a scraping sound on playback. This can be adjusted but is best done by your dealer as it really needs the test CD and you have to take the glass door and clamper cover off. If it is that, it may be covered by B&O.

I have had my BS 9000 for over 2 years and it has made the same high pitched whine since day one. I thought it might be a problem but the 9000 in the B&O store also did it.

Could be something to do with it being semi-open (ie. glass cover is not fully enclosed/sealed).

I have had several BS9000's in my posession and none of them has made any noise when the cd spins. Clearly they are not designed to make a noise so this is a fault which your dealer should have sorted for you. He could have his own fixed at the same time!!

I have a BS-9000 aswell, and I am sorry to say, but but when you are near the BS-9000 you really can hear the CD spinning, even a friend in Belgium had the same problem. So I do believe that there is a " problem" with the BS-9000, mine is not near the sofa, it got a lonly spot in the livingroom, so I do not hear anything!

I also can hear the CD spinning inside my BS9000, but only when:

the music is mute, the room is absolutely quiet, and my ear is closer than 15 cms from glass panel closed or 30cms with the glass door open.
I never use the BS9000 in those conditions, so everything it's all right for me.

The 9000 will make a sound when playing, this is normal and depends I think on the thickness on the cd.

The sound that I think JS is reporting here is a whine which is very different.  I had the same and was fixed by replacing the CD mech.  The whine is very high pitched and not a scraping sound that the cd makes when spinning.

Get your local service center to have a look at it and take it from there.  iirc it was in the region of £200 to replace.
 

I had the same problem which I endured for years.  It was definitely a mechanical sound which was really noticeable at low volumes in classical pieces.  Eventually I took it to a dealer and had the CD mechanism replaced.  It was three years ago and my recollection was that it cost about 200 euros.  I have to say that I rarely use it now thanks to iTunes.
