Avant 28" VCR in a linkroom.

    Hi,

I have an odd problem, which I hope someone in here can help me with.

I have a masterlink installed in my house. In my main room I have a BV7-32 and BS3000 with BeoLab 6000. In my bedroom I have a BV6-22. Everything works just perfect.

Today I then bought an old used Avant 28" VCR for our guestroom and I connected that to my masterlink. My problem is that it seems I can't get the link to work on the Avant in the guestroom.

TV and V.TAPE is working, as these are local sources. But all the link sources DTV, DVD, Radio and CD does not work! I simply can't get these link sources to work on my Avant in my linkroom (in the guestroom). I then thought that it might because the Avant needed to be set to Option 6. However I can't set the option either!

I have no idea how old the Avant is. But it is an Avant 28" VCR, type 8111, serial no 11186598. It seems to be a local problem with the Avant only, as I have no problem in other linkrooms. The masterlink cable/connection for my guestroom also works, as I have tried the connection with an other TV as well.

This makes me wonder if my Avant actually does support Masterlink (I assume it would, as it has a masterlink connection + and RF output)

An other problem I now also realized on the Avant is that when watching TV and V.TAPE there are red horizontal lines on the screen. These are visible when the picture is dark (i.e. when you watch evening / dark scenes in a movie). When I bought this used Avant, I was told that the tube was replaced in Dec. 2001

    1) Anyone who can help me with my linkproblem? How can I get it to work? How can I set the Avant to work in a linkroom?

    2) And, anyone who knows why I have red horizontal lines on the screen? And what I can do about it?

    3) Anyone who knows how old my Avant is? Which year is it from?

    Thanks and regards,

    Lars.

    Lars,

The reason your AVANT does not work in your guest room is because it is a MASTER device ONLY on the Masterlink. You cannot have two Master devices on the same Masterlink, well you can, but it will not work.

You could tune in the link frequency (normally 591 Mhz Channel 36) and have it work effectively as another analogue TV and you would need to add another B&O product in the same guest room such as the Beobab 3500 (because it is a slave device)  to react to the Beo4 remote. With this configuration you could then use CD, DTV etc, but when using DTV the AVANT will need to be on the analogue TV tuned to the link frequency. Frankly it is a bit of a overkill to have an AVANT in this manner.

The red lines you can see are "flyback" lines which are normally hidden except if the TV is incorrectly adjusted or the tube is starting to fail.

It could be that the drive to the red gun has been set a little high when the tube was replaced which can be adjusted, the brightness is set higher than it should be or the tube is on its way out.

With regards to the age of the AVANT, I am a little surprised by the Type number of 8111, are you sure this is correct because by my list an AVANT 28 VCR did not have a type number near this number ?

However the age can be defined by the serial number. the first two digits define it with 21 being for products for 2008. So, your AVANT is 1998/99

    Regards Keith....

Re: Avant 28" VCR in a linkroom.

    Hello,

Well, I have an Avant DVD as a video master and I am using an Avant VCR (From 1999) as a Link TV.  However there is a small trick to it:

Audio sources - All works fine

Video Sources: SAT(DTV) works perfect, but if I want to see a DVD from the living room I had to add <LINK> to the List button on Beo4.  When I have <LINK> in the window of Beo4 I press DVD and it starts.

    Regards,

    Thomas

    Hello,

only Avant with a serial number higher than 12183561 can be used as LINK products.

Thanks a lot to all of you for the great help.

So it really seems like I have no other option than to return the used Avant I just bought. Reasons being two-fold: 1) the TV seems to have a fault due to the red lines; and 2) I can't use it for my intended purpose.

Moving forward, I will have to buy another used Avant, with a serial number higher than 12183561, for our guest room. This way, my intended setup would have a chance of success (namely having the Avant in the guest room act like a "slave" and not a master, in which case I would probably need to set the V.OPTION to option 6 on the Avant).

Obviously, the easy way would be just buy e.g. a used BV6-22 for our guest room. However a used BV6-22 trades for prices 7 times higher than the older Avant 28".

    Lars.

    Keith,

The Type no. for the TV says 8111 on the label on the back of the TV. However according to the service menu, the Type no. is 5111003.

    Lars,

On reviewing it again, I see the 8111 is correct for a Northern Europe model 50 Hz version (Mark I & Mark II) which means its age is actually prior to April 1997 because that's when B&O stopped manufacturing them.

I would certainly return the AVANT for a more up to date model and certainly beyond the serial number stated previously.

I cannot explain the Type number in the service menu.

    Keith,

As always, your input has been extremely valuable.

The Avant has now been returned and I am now hunting down another, and newer Avant beyond the serial number stated previously.

I hope I will get my intended setup to work once I have got a newer Avant.

    BR,
    Lars.

Sorry, but that wasn't neccesary (Embarrassed)

Like for all the other avants, the 8111 type (I owned one) where several software releases.

The first one started with purple text which was replaced by the red version.

So, you should have checked the software version, and updated it. After that you could probably use the option 6.

But option 2 was a way of checking the linkconnectivity.

    Hi Beobuddy,

Thanks a lot for the advice. But now I have returned it Smile it did indeed had purple text in the menu, so it was definately the old SW.

I am actually pleased that I returned it, as it seemed to be a very old model (one of the first MK I's). I'd prefer a 1-2 years newer MK I.

Anyway, the Avant had other problems like the red lines, so I prefer to buy a decent working Avant instead Big Smile

    Lars.
