OK, so now what? - Beogram 4000

    Hi

Following my previous post, I've put the Beogram 4000 together - this involved the following:

    1. Turning the transport screws on the bottom to 'Play'
    2. Loosening the front wood surround
    3. Removing the deck chassis
    4. Putting the belt on
    5. Replacing the deck chassis
    6. Connecting it all up to the amp

When I switched the power on the light on the first arm came on and the platter started to spin.  However, when I pressed the OFF switch it just makes a noise (like a very slight screeching sound).  This sound goes away when I press 'ON'.  But, it won't actually play anything - as in the arm doesn't move.  The arms can be moved by hand along the track and all the noises stop when you press the centre of the control plate - but thr record just spins.

You can lower the pick-up manually and raise it again but not move it from side to side. Edit - don't seem to be able to lower the arm now!

Any suggestions as I'm stuck now!

    Thanks

Does it have the arm belt on? It should do as there is no reason to remove it. It rather depends on how good you are at fixing things next. If as useless as me, get someone good to look at it! If you have the correct equipment, the service manual complete with flow charts is on site. This is not a Beogram for beginners though!

Hmm, arm belt - not sure that it does.  Should you be able to move the arm assembly by hand?  I have a unit for 'spares' that you can't move the arms on so I'm not sure what is correct.

I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to get the unit serviced to make sure that it all performs as it should - not something that I would attempt myself!

Any recommendations as to a good service place?  Also, what sort of price does a service run to?

The noises it makes sounds like motors that can't quite do what they need to...

    Cheers

    Maidenhead.

Is the arm band the rubber band that drives the arms from two wheels?  If so, it wasn't on - just put it back on and will try again.

But I still reckon a service wouldn't go amiss...

Well - the spare unit seems to be working which is ironic isn't it?  As in you power it up and press 'ON' and it goes across and drops the needle, you get sound and pressing 'OFF' picks up the needle, moves the assembly to park position.

The 'main' unit still spins the platter as soon as the power is switched on and 'OFF' seems to work, but not 'ON' and you can't lower the arm.  Also, you can move the arm across the record manually but it is very slow, whereas moving it back across to the start position is very quick.

At least they don't make the sounds that they did a few hours ago.

    Any suggestions?

Get Tim Jaran to service it - he is a fan of the 4000. he lives in Farnborough near Fleet in Hampshire. You can contact him via Beocentral. Don't pull it apart and try to fix it yourself first though in case something gets broken!

Great, Farnborough is perfect as I work round there!

I've sent him an email via Beocentral and will wait for his reply.  Don't think that there's much wrong.

But ironically, I've just put the spare unit back together and it seems to work well.  Fingers crossed!

Well the spare unit is up and running - playing an old Elton John album as I write - sounds great and I'm sure that the stylus is not even at its best.

Managed to fit the control plate back in properly while I was in there.  But my technical messing about stops here!

    Sounds great, looks superb!

    Cheers for now
