Connecting Beogram 3404 to non-B&O tuner / receiver

Hi. Several years ago I bought a B&O system including a Beomaster 2000 series, master link, and Beogram 3404. All but the 3404 went when we sold the house. I powered up the turntable a few weeks ago, everything seems to be working and the needle looks good. I bought a TCC preamp (TC-400) to connect my turntable to a Sony tuner / receiver but I have to raise the tuner volume to its maximum to get any sound, weak and very distorted. Connections are 5 pin din to RCA to preamp, RCA from preamp to tuner. Ground wire from turntable chassis to tuner ground. I'm thinking I may have a bad preamp or (possibly) a bad cartridge Unsure. Any suggestions or advice are welcome.

howdy fellow carolinian... welcome to beoworld!

    take a quick look here

i used a tcc also -the 750 -though to a non riaa beomaster. worked great after fiddling.
1.) confirm the rca's are all placed correctly!!!
2.) does the 400 have a dial to "whick it up" like the 750?
3.) the 750 does and i had to crank it up to come close to matching the other sources -still not equal, but ok.
4.) your cartridge may well be bad if you still get nothing. i happen to have a 3404 and i could send the cartridge off to you for testing (we don't live that far apart).

    keep us posted.

Re: Connecting Beogram 3404 to non-B&O tuner / receiver

Jeff, Thanks for the fast reply. The 400 is a vanilla version with no dials to tweak so I think I'll move up to a pre-amp with better capabilities. As soon as I can get a replacement I'll let you know. RCAs are tight and look to be correctly connected. Thanks for the offer to test with your cartridge and have you a price for the BM 1900 or 2000?

you know what, my tcc750 + cables are not in use right now.
i'll set it up and play w/ it tonight, and see what i come up with...
i seem to remember the rca connections were not exactly straight forward.

i'll have to review the bm's i have and let you know -of course, you wouldn't need the preamp then...

    rich,

you mentioned you were sending the ground to your sony, does the 400 not have a grounding lug?

also, is your din out to (2) rca's or (4)?

regardless of all the above -my prob ending up being the cart -no fiddling would deal w/ that i am afraid.

lmk the above and i think it my be best to go ahead and get a good cart to you for testing as my bet is that is what is wrong.

send a "PM" to me if you want (using "contact -send personal message" in the top of this frame) to fwd any personal info to me...

upon a reply from me you will see your personal inbox in the top right corner of this page will have a message...

    Jeff,

The 400 doesn't have a grounding lug and my concern was making sure the TT was grounded to the amp / tuner. The din adapter has just 2 rca outputs and no ground. I'll send a pm and take you up on the offer of a test cart.

ok, well then the 400 and the 750 are quite different, and the (2) rca would be tough to not hook up correctly -hee hee. (i was running to a 4).

    i will chk my PM's!

    ++++ rich, you have a PM ++++

Is it wired the correct way? This is why you are better of with the type with 4 RCA connections.

Craig, I never thought to check. I picked it off E-Bay a few months ago and figured it was wired correctly.  Embarrassed

Could you steer me to a pin-out diagram. Thanks.

@ craig -indeed. as mentioned, i ran mine w/ the (4) rca -and the wiring was not that straightforward. it took a couple of re-do's to get the lines correct.

@rich -obviously, i have the (4) lead type -and i am sure i prob have several more -i'll take a look tonight!

Craig, checked and the connector is wired correctly. Guess that puts the cartridge in doubt.

    Thanks,

Re: Connecting Beogram 3404 to non-B&O tuner / receiver

Jeff, Darndest thing!! Conected TT to Sony tuner through TC-400 pre-amp, removed my cart and put in your 20E. Started TT..overloaded speakers with hum. Swapped TC-400 for TC-750L with gain control at low end. MUSIC!!.LaughingRemoved pre-amp..still music. Replaced your 20E with my 20EN..still music. Only guess is that the Sony phone input has its own pre-amp and all the while it was overloaded!

I'll use the TC-750L output to connect the Beogram to my PC and am returning your 20E with many thanks!

Craig, Thanks for your tip on din to RCA cabling. try to avoid working with more than 2 pins as I usually wire them backwards. They're not in order anyway. Rich
