    CDX for Christmas

    Hi everyone

It is Christmas day and I have finished repairing a Beogram CDX.  It is now working perfectly so I thought that I would share a few ideas with others.  When I first examined the unit it coughed and spluttered giving the impression that the limit switches weren’t so good.  When it didn’t respond at all, a push in the top left corner did show some signs of life so there had to be some hope.  Taking it apart, the first thing I noted was that the left hinge was cracked and I knew that I had seen a thread about that on Beoworld.  Thanks to Chris (Medogsfat), I was able to fabricate a new hinge and my efforts are shown in the photo.  All along, I focused on making the “Chris clip” and this should definitely be patented because it works so well.  However, it didn’t fix the CDX.

Further examination showed that there was a plastic arm that had also broken a long time ago because there was no broken piece for me to look at.  I didn’t really think at that point in time that there was any hope for this machine but it was Christmas and miracles should happen.  The photo shows the broken arm and above it, my attempt to fabricate a new type of spring.

    Re: CDX for Christmas

My replacement spring was made out of a piece of thin spring steel, taken from some old window blinds.  It was fairly easy to bend but the dimensions had to be reasonably accurate.  Luckily, I had a few pieces to work with because the first few attempts were messy.  Finally, I got a piece to fit and the result is shown in the photo.  The CDX has now been reassembled and all of the limits properly adjusted.  It works great and while it is not 100% B&O authentic, Chris’s clip and Geoff’s spring have renovated another CDX.  It sounds brilliant with the Beomaster 8000, also newly rebuild with lots of effort and one of Martin’s caps kits.

The message is simple, there are lots of good ideas on Beoworld and many great contributors.  To all of you, many thanks for your time and knowledge, a great Christmas to you all and a happy New Year.

    Geoff

Very well done Geoff - if you'd asked beforehand though I have a spare arm and could have saved you a bit of effort there. The up side though is you have shown us all that there is yet another "super bodge" available to keep these lovely machines working.

Have to agree they are lovely machines. Just sold an absolute minter on Ebay. Thankfully the buyer came to collect it in the end. Have to admit there is a part of me that is regretting selling it already.

    Hi Geoff

Can you repost the pics of the arm? I am new here and I have a CDX in need of help. I have repaired the left hing but it looks like there is an arm beneath it that also is broken, but i can not find the missing piece so I am having a trouble repairing it. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Re: CDX for Christmas

    Hello Odinn

Welcome to BeoWorld, its a great forum for getting lots of useful information and having fun.

This thread goes back a long time now but the good news is that my CDX has continued to run faultlessly.  Things get tricky when the plastic parts start to break up and you do need a certain amount of luck that the repair will hold together for a reasonable time.

The first photo that I have shows the assembly removed from the CDX and the white plastic section which had broken.  This part is needed to activate one of the limits.

The second photo shows a close up of the broken plastic section and the spring insert that I made to replace the lower follower.

The final photo shows the spring clip in position and this arm was then able to make its limit properly.

Perhaps you could provide a photo of the broken part on your machine as that will help identify the problem that you have.  You could then ask around to see if there are some spares available - obviously an easier solution compared with making up parts yourself.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

    Geoff

Pictures seem to have come out extra large for some strange reason.  I hope that you can interpret what is going on.

    Re: CDX for Christmas

Thanks alot Geoff! This is exactly the same failure that my CDX have as you can see from the photo. Is the purpose of the original piece of plastic just to act as a spring, that returns the arm to its former position efter activating the microswitch? When I removed the mechanism out of the mainframe the little rubber thingst on the photo fell out, do you know where it belongs?

    Thanks again.

    Re: CDX for Christmas

    Hi Odinn

Yes, your failure is just about in the same place as mine so it must simply be a design weakness.  The plastic section as far as I can remember actuates the limit switch by following an inclined metal track.  It has to be able to follow both sides of the track so that it can return to the original position.  You still have a decent length of plastic to hold a spring in place so you should be able to fix that one.

I think that the rubber section that you found is probably just a cable retainer - see photo below

    Regards

    Geoff

    Re: CDX for Christmas

You were right about the rubber thing Geoff:)  I have fixed the hinge thanks to Medogsfats trick and now this arm thanks to your help.

I will get time to put the CDX together later in this week, I just hope it works as it should.

I just love how the internet is making the world smaller and bringing people closer.

    Re: CDX for Christmas

Just stumbled across this addition to the CDX thread. I still have a spare intact arm if needed.

Glad my hinge repair technique is still proving usefulSmile
