I don't know loads about tape machines, but it could be that the rubber rollers are not pressing the tape against the capstans hard enough so the tape is being pulled through by the take up spool, which would be slightly faster than the speed the capstans would feed the tape through. Perhaps the mechanism is sticky or there is something out of place

Oh ok, that is a shame, does anyone know a place in the UK that can align the coils??? I guess a scope and a signal generator are needed. I may be able to borrow these things, but I am not an electrical engineer, in fact I am a mechanical engineer, so I still wouldn't really know what to do unless there is a webpage or reference with good instructions

Hi Dillen Many thanks, and yes the radio gets a lot louder just off the signal strength peak although the stereo light doesn't come on. I have to admit, I know nothing about radios, but I have the circuit diagram and can locate these coils, they are in a section encased by a metal box. Can I align them just by trial and error??? It does tune in, at roughly the right place on the dial, but what happens is that as a station is tuning in it gets louder as one would expect, and then when fully tuned in, goes very quiet indeed

The trick is to find some kind of paint which gives a frosted appearance. This makes it a matt finish and also gives it that greyish kind of look. I have tried amny thing to get the correct finish. The keys are brushed stainless steel with a matt frosted lacquer/paint over the top. I have tried many things but the best I have come up with is a glass/porcelain etch paint applied with an air brush which is then baked to make it durable. Infact it should be dishwasher proof!!!!
