I have a musical fidelity X-LPS V3 Preamp. Is this an appropriate pre amp? I am not sure to run it in MM or MC mode? Do es anyone know?

Ok, well I finally had a chance to try out my Beogram RX. I am using a Arcam A80 amp, Musical Fidelity X-LPS V3 PreAmp- Monitor Audio speakers- Sounds like crap- Low volume- distorted-using a recently bought good condition MMC4 Cartridge- Do I need to use the pre-amp with this system? Really appreciate some help on troubleshooting- Barry
