I have been thinking of replacing my rear 4000s with a pair of 9s. I decided to connect my 9s in the rear to see how they sounded. Unfortunately I get a loud buzzing. My thought is perhaps the power link cable?

My connection is as follows:  Power Link from BV7 to in wall Panamax unit. That Power Link does not have a triangle on it (not a Mark 3?)  That in wall Panamax unit is then connected by in wall wiring to the rear in wall Panamax units. The wiring connecting these is a coarse purple covered Power Link cable. From the rear in wall Panamax unit a Power Link with a triangle on it (Mark 3?)

Do I need a Mark 3 from TV to wall also and what about the purple in wall wiring? Is it Mark 3 compatible or not? It was installed in 2004.

Or is there some other cause for the buzzing?  Thanks!

 

It does need to be Mark 3 cable if it is an ICEpower loudspeaker - the Mk3 carries an extra earth which will sort that buzzing right out!

Is there any solution other than tearing out walls to run new cable? Is the purple wire that is used in walls for Powerlink considered a Mark 1,2, or 3 or is it just a generic wire than can be used for Mark 1,2, or 3 depending on how it is connected?

Razlaw, I don't see any issues in replacing the cables without tearing down the whole wall.

An electrician should be able to work that out for you (e.g. by using the cables that are in place now to pull the new cables in correct position).

You didn't cement the cables into the wall, did you?

I am not an expert at all but with the installation / wall mounting of my BS9000 I had a few ''oh oh WTF?'' moments where my initial tought was 'hmmm this will never work' and in the end all was perfect en neat.

And with everything, for other peoples issues it is easy to say 'piece of cake'.

Unfortunately I do not think the cables can be pulled through. The current cables were installed when the house was built. Electrician ran wires up the walls, across ceiling, and back down on other wall. It is a very lengthy cable.

Im pretty sure adapting your existing cabling should be fine - ithink i have done this before by replacing the old pl ends with mk3 pl ends and simply soldering the newly required mk3 earth to the earth that already existed in the mk2 pl.

Ps i have never heard of or seen purple pl cable before, perhaps it was a non B&O substitute?

Good luck - i am confident this will work for you. As i say, Mk3 pl just introduced an additional ground cable.

Purple cable was installed by dealer. It came on a large spool and was designed for long runs.

From what you say there may be hope of using the existing cable.

If they're interior walls running the cables is simple.

Exterior exonerating more complicated because Of insulation. It can still be done though.

I've added lots of cables to my walls.

You'll need a drill an 18" auger bit and a fish tape.

After that it's a snap.
