I don't know if this is the right forum to post in, Vintage could definately be a secondary option, but here it goes:
I will *maybe* be starting my higher Education as an engineer (
Bachelor of Technology Management and Marine Engineering. ) in Aarhus this september, about a two hour drive from where I live now. Because of that, I would like to move into a dorm room and that would put some limitations on my need
As I own a LOT of B&O (just read my signature ), I only allow myself to bring one audiomaster, one record player, one cassette deck and a pair of small bookshelf speakers.
This move will force me to use headphones for the most, what would you recommend?I hear rock music of all styles, Beatles-Boston-ELO-Yes-Megadeth-Avenged Sevenfold. The budget would be low, or about £100.
Thinking about what to bring, and I have come to the conclusion that I can't be without one of my Beogram 8002's. The recapped Beomaster 4400 will do as the audiomaster, as I know that the preamplifier and EQ is beautifully constructed. Cassette deck would of course be the Beocord 9000 that I have had restored last year. Speakers should be my Beovox S35 or S45.
Beocenter 9300, Beogam CD50, Beocord 5500, Beomaster 3400, Beomaster 4400, 2 Beogram 4000, Beomaster 8000, 2 beogram 8002, Beovox S-75, Beovox MS150.2, Beovox RL6000, Beovox S-35, Beomaster 6000, 2 Beocord 9000, Beocord 8004, Beocord 5000, Form 1, 2x Beolink 1000, Beo4, MX3500, LS4500. Born 1993.

I have a pair of Sennheiser, some 15 years old and still doing its job, I cant recommend other brands as I never tried others, exept for the Beo A 8, where the cable broke after a couple of years. Sennheiser has a lot of models in your price range.
BTW my son is studying in Aarhus, BM 1900 and Bvox P 45, in September I have to bring the 2 of you together.

Re: Moving away from home
Hi Søren,
I think you should broaden your range a bit since you will be listening to headphones extensively. This is an important part of your new setup.
Will you be listening to music at your dorm and on the move? If so, you will want some headphones with some decent sensitivity to work well with iPods and the like.
If only at the dorm - go big. I would go for a set of AKG K701. A friend of mine was nice enough to let me borrow his for a couple days and they are incredible sounding and you can wear them for hours. The 701 is a bit pricey but totally worth it. Also of notable mention in the AKG family is the K242, smaller with higher sensitivity, pretty good with mobile devices.
Next to that I would recommend the Fostex T50RP, a model with electrostatic (orthographic) drivers. This is one I've never heard but gets amazing reviews and is very affordable.
Also check out audio-technica and Grado.

Re: Moving away from home
@ Søren:
It could be fun to move into the same dorm as him, has he caught the Beovirus yet?
@ Evan:
I have a pair of Sennheiser earplugs for mobile- and ipod use, I would like to use them at the stereo for the most.
Grado indeed has a nice line of models, the 125 and 225-series should be tried someday. AKG is known in my world (studio and musicians) as "the definitive headphone" for studio use.

As a mather of fact, he is looking for a room mate, his mate is leaving after this coming semester, and September is perfect, he has a 2 room, kitchen, bath, dorm. No BeoVirus, his Beo I gave him for Xmas and he is used to Beo from home, but he can cook and is economical minded, and is very good in mathematics, speaks 4 langauges.

Re: Moving away from home
In South Quadrangle of the University of Michigan in 1984, everyone had a tower of separate components and at least one pair of loudspeakers. We had to compete with guitarists with Marshall half-stacks, so loudspeakers were generally much larger than S45.
Current primary listening: SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

Re: Moving away from home
@ Evan:
I must try the K701 and Q701 in the music store then, they get really good reviews. Seems like the Fostex also receives a lot of praise.
@ Søren:
I would really be interested in finding a nice dorm and of course a cool roommate, sounds a perfect match. Should at least "infect" him when I bring some of my gear
I'm still considering when to start, will send him an E-mail when I have decided it.

Re: Moving away from home
good luck Soren with your degree...exciting times ahead for you...I envy you the experience. Did my degree in Trinity College Dublin and graduated in 1991. such fond memories of college days:):)
Problem with headphones is they range from Euro 20 to Euro 3000...my advice is go into a few shops and listen....Ive used both B&O and BOSE...I know BOSE gets a lot of stick on this site, but actually their headphones are pretty decent for everyday use. they are not studio quality, but as I said, if you want studio quality ones, you better increase your budget. Noise-cancelling ones are great, esp in a student accomadation!!!!
Listened to opera on a good set of Sony headphones recently (were about $400) and they sounded great.....
I make a pediction that with 6 months of moving in, the room will have a lot more B&O than you cureently plan :)
take care
Paul (dublin)
BeoVision 7-40 MKIV with BeoLab 7-4 Vertical speaker, BeoSound 9000 CD/Tuner, Speakers are a pair of BeoLab 5 in Black with a pair of BeoLab 4000 as rear speakers, and in bedroom BeoCentre 6-26 with BeoLab 8000's. Both the Kitchen and bathroom have Beolab3500's. BeoCom 2 and BeoCom 5 phones. Beo 6 and Beo4 remotes. LATEST ADDITION: Beogram 7000 with MMC2 stylus....

Re: Moving away from home
@ Paul:
Trinity College sure looks like a great place to study, was in Dublin with my class in October last year. It's a great city with a lot of interesting culture
One of my friends is a BOSE-fan, he has a sounddock and a pair of earphones and both products are fine quality stuff. I would rather go with a pair of AKG big-style headphones though, as I also would like to record and mix demos for bands (should the need arise). I worked with making a demo as late as last month, and it was pretty much impossible to get the perfect sound on my Beolab 8000 system because of uneven frequency response.

Søren, start as soon as you can, you are still young, not married, no children (I guess), get it done as fast and as soon as you can, do not delay. If you push it in front of you, maybe something comes between at you will lose the opportunity, GO FOR IT, and good luck.

Going to visit the school in March, but I may need some money to get debt-free out of the study I'm afraid. Trying desperately to get a job at the time
