Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) -part 2
Just as I figured...
Join the broken bits with cyano, then sand broken tracks and make solder bridges or better still, cut small pieces of copper wire to make the bridges more reliable. I'd also glue plastic pieces on each side of the PCB to render it more rigid.
Good luck!

Thanks, Jacques. Will give it a go tomorrow or Monday.

Absolutely, yes, but only if you won't miss it.

No problem.
I never intended (wasn't crazy enough) to mechanically restore this one. I bought it for the shell.
I'll take a peak tonight over some red.
Jacques, would you like the MC1437P?
Anybody/anything else?

Rich/Jacques,
What a piece of machinery!
I have extracted both of your respective boards.
I don't want to put any heat on the MC, so I will ship the complete board.
With the holidays, the earliest shipping would likely be Tuesday.
Unless your addresses have changed since our last contact, I will ship to the addresses I have in the rolodex.
Let me know otherwise.
...and Happy New Year to you as well!

Thanks, Jeff. Whenever you can get the board out is great! Same address.
Survived the ice sculptures and dinner out with the kids...now it's time for the serious drinking!
Happy New Year!

Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) -part 2
Thank you Jeff! Same address here as well! But I think you could safely unsolder it! Its failure upon my machine was in fact due to a (factory!) short between two components, which in the long run made the chip decide that enough is enough!
Now I wonder how we will align everything correctly. We don't have the special tools (nobody on the planet does I guess) and we will need alignment tapes to do it... It is not a Beocord 9000 with its auto-tests!
Best wishes for 2012!

Now working! No tape chewing, just beautiful music. It is incredibly fast—and safe—to rewind!

Thanks, but I still have a thing or two left to do: replace all the red ROE caps and the oxydised trimmers on the PPM board —not that they measure badly, but I hate it when they look like that!
Oh, and replace the dual op-amp! I can listen to it because the phones amp takes its signal before the final MC amp...
Maybe also replace the PSU reservoir caps, which is cheap anyway.

Man, you are WAY more motivated than I am.
I will likely do the same - some day - but it won't be for awhile.

Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) -part 2
I want to be able to write:
SMMC20EN --> Beogram 4000 --> Beomaster 4400 --> Perspective MC120-2 !!
or Beocord 5000 -->
That's why! I've spent countless hours on the Beogram and Beomaster (ask my other half...) and I want this to work (no pun on the marriage, that works too!)
I've tried lots of different tapes, old and new, pre-recordeds, with the same success. Who said this Beocord chews tapes?
And I don't know about your head (no, the Beocord's!) but mine looks unused. Not so the spool motor, which Jeff might do something about, hopefully. There's one on ebay at the moment in UK, I might bid for it. It doesn't look too good though.

Can you please confirm that on your deck the head is not at right angles to the cassette like mine?

Looks the same.
I glued my broken PCB last night, and this morning I was able to fix all but 3 of the traces with solder. I tried to use wire on the other 3 without taking the timer off and unscrewing the board, but I wan't happy with the results. I took the wire out and quit. I'll wait to work on my deck again until after I receive the board from Jeff.

jrantala:
Oh yes, the timer belt: I left only small opening between the machine and keyboard (i.e. almost closed the keyboard down) and then used my wife's crochet hooks to get the belt in place.
They are actually very good tools with all belts, tuning wires in old radios etc., the crochet hooks!

By the way, while I was at Lowes getting superglue and a few other other items, I discovered Kobalt makes a set of tools that includes a straight pick, 45 degree, 90 degree, and a hook.

Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) -part 2
Well at least you tried! That one wasn't an easy one anyway.
Thanks for the picture. I thought the alignment was odd (well, it is according to Philips standards) but I remember that my Beocord 9000 has the same kind of head tilt. By the way, the cassettes I did on the Beocord 9000 replay perfectly on this deck, piano notes being rock-steady, with plenty of treble with dolby on. Nakamichi ones don't. I'll never understand why tapes recorded on Naks are always out of azimuth when played on any other deck I have...

Nice find! As far as I'm concerned, I'll use one of the good lady wife's crochets!
I see that your trimmers look as horrid as mine...
By the way, where does the PC1 to PC2 strand go?

On my machine (which is a 4705), the recording head is about the same as You guys, and the playback head is even more tilted forward- should have taken a picture, but missed that, I'm afraid.

Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) -part 2
The service manual for the Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) calls out using several B&O alignment tools. Has anyone ever come across those? It would be handy to reproduce them for future servicing. Without the alignment tools are you just eyeballing the adjustments and then testing the results with a cassette?
I have one of these decks I bought new back around 1977 or 1978. It was in a box out in a shed for years until last year. I brought it in and took it apart to fully clean everything but got side tracked. I didn't know all of the history behind this deck until watching this post. This will motivate me to restore mine....thanks.
