    Idea [I] BL5 / BV10 / BS9000 : Connections

    Hi guys,

As told in another thread, I've decided to replace my (newly acquired) BL9 with a pair of BL5 (my Holy Grail) ordered today at my B&O local store.

My set-up will be like this:

BV10-40 connected to BS9000 with ML

    BL5 connected to BV10-40 with PL MK2

Could you please tell me more about the digital connection (SPDIF)?

I know there are 2 x SPDIF ports in the BV10-40.

And I think there's one in the BS9000.

How will my B&O technician connect them together so that I can get the best quality?

Will there be some SPDIF included in the BL5 package or will I need to buy them apart from Steve (Sounds Heavenly)?

I've never used something else than PL cables with my previous BL's, and don't know a lot about the digital cables.

I know I need some MK2 cables that are thicker than MK3 to connect the BL5 but that's all.

I trust my B&O dealer and their technician skills, but want to know for my information what's the best way to connect such a set-up.

    Could tell me please?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,

    E d o u a r d  G

OK, I’m running an almost similar technical setup but with a BS5 rather than a BS9000.

    Suggested setup:-

    1.      Connect SPDif BS9000 socket to BL5 -1 in SPDif socket,

    2.      Connect SPDif BL5 -1 out socket to BL5 -2 in SPDif socket,

    3.      Connect SPDif BL5 -2 out socket to BV10 SPDif socket (not sure if this actually does anything)

    4.      Connect BV10 PL Front sockets to respective BL5 PL sockets

    5.      Connect BV10 PL Rear sockets to BL( or other rears)

    6.      Connect ML cable from BV10 to BS9000

    7.      Use Beo4/5/6 to place BS9000 in A.opt 0

    8.      Use Beo4/5/6 to place BV10 in V.opt 2

    9.      Goto BV10 Menu/Options/Sound to configure loudspeakers

BL5 will use the SPDif on receipt of digital signal from BS9000. PL cables still required for volume control, as is the ML cable as control will be via the TV module.

There’s a lot of cables in this set-up excluding any HDMI/power cables etc...

The BL5’s come with 5m ferrite-coiled MK2 PL and 5m ferrite coiled co-ax cables. You may need an extra two for the BS9000 to BL5 link and possibly BL5 to BV10 link

    Hello!

In this thread http://forum.beoworld.org/forums/p/41335/343337.aspx#343337 connection-issues have been discussed!

Vienna is the member who will tell you what to do!

If I understood correctly: you will only get "CD"-signals via SPDIF from your BS9000 to your BL5; all other signals will run through PL (also some info like Volume if listening to a CD)

So if you do not listen to a CD the SPDIF might be useless...

Getting a BS5/BM5 combo: with correct setup you can listen to your HDD-titels like they where CDs -> so you could enjoy music via SPDIF

    Regards Elmar

    Hi John,

My dealer will get them back as I don't want (and can't afford) to keep them for a Home Cinema set-up.

Hi Alen (hope this is you name),

I wanted my dealer to buy my BS9000 as I don't use it anymore (I use Apple TV 2 to stream music), but my wife insisted in keeping it as she loves it a lot....Sad

    Hi Elmar,

I use my Apple TV 2 connected with HDMI to the BV10 to listen to the music.

I don't use the BS9000 very often, but as explained before, my wife doesn't want me to sell it.

Even if I don't use the BS9000 a lot, I want it to send audio infos the best way to BL5 as for the BV10 to the BL5, so I think I will need 2 pairs of SPDIF cables to connect them together.

I'll talk about it with my B&O dealer.

    Cheers,

    Bonjour Edouard!

    I do understand your wife!

But I have no idea if the music runs through the BV10 without being processed to the BL5....
before I've the mentioned thread I always thought either PL or SPDIF but Vienna told me that BOTH cables have to be used because the Labs need information that would not run through the SPDIF

it gets very special and I do not want to write something wrong...I just wanted to make you aware that it's not that easy how it seems to be...

About the BS5, my wife is already the most beautiful and sounding player Big Smile you didn't hear her when taking a shower !!!

To be serious just for a minute, I explained her that CD is history, but I don't know why women are so attached to "old" things...even if we don't use them anymore....The BS9000 is a masterpiece but I would have prefered this masterpiece to be bought by my dealer as the BL5 are some expensive toys!

Don't you agree with me Alen?

    Bonjour Elmar,

Yes, the BL5 need some cabling skills to work the best as they can...They're worth it!

I think the easiest way will be what Mr10% advised me:

    BS9000 connected to BL5 n°1 with SPDIF in + BL5 n°1 SPDIF out to BL5 n°2 SPDIF in + BL5 n°2 SPDIF out to BV10 SPDIF in.

As the BS9000 is 10 meters far from the BV10 and that I don't use it very often, would the sound be dirty if the BS9000 wasn't connected to BL5 with SPDIF but only with the ML cable (as today for the BL9)?

If there isn't any major quality loss without using a SPDIF from BS9000 to BL5, would that mean that my B&O technician should connect the BL5 to BV10 like this:

BV10-40 SPDIF port n°1 out to BL5 SPDIF port n°1 in + BV10 SPDIF port n°2 out to BL5 SPDIF port n°2 in

    Hi Vienna,

    Thanks for your reply.

Mr10% advised me this to plug the cables:

    Suggested setup:-

    1.      Connect SPDif BS9000 socket to BL5 -1 in SPDif socket,

    2.      Connect SPDif BL5 -1 out socket to BL5 -2 in SPDif socket,

    3.      Connect SPDif BL5 -2 out socket to BV10 SPDif socket (not sure if this actually does anything)

    4.      Connect BV10 PL Front sockets to respective BL5 PL sockets

    5.      Connect BV10 PL Rear sockets to BL( or other rears)

    6.      Connect ML cable from BV10 to BS9000

    7.      Use Beo4/5/6 to place BS9000 in A.opt 0

    8.      Use Beo4/5/6 to place BV10 in V.opt 2

    9.      Goto BV10 Menu/Options/Sound to configure loudspeakers

But if I don't connect the BS9000 to the BL5 with SPDIF but only let it like it is (connected to BV10 with ML), where will I put the SPDIF if I cannot plug them to the BV10?

If I only use some PL MK2 cables (correct cables, right?) to connect the BL5 to my BV10 and listening to music from the Apple TV2, won't the sound quality be as good as if I listen to music from BS9000 with SPDIF connected to BL5?

I don't what to ask to my dealer so that the quality is the best as possible.

    Re: BL5 / BV10 / BS9000 : Connections

    Philosophy (back to the basics):

If you connect digital audio sources like a CD/DVD/...  directly via SPDIF you are avoiding
    a "double" conversion the signal.

First in the source, from digital to analogue and a 2nd time in the BLb 5s, from analogue
    to digital again.

The result is a sound beeing 2 steps "closer to the original recording" - but not necessarly
    more "impressive/ airy / detailed/ ..."

Sometimes minor faults like slight phase shifts / some distortions / and so on ... are similar
to sunglasses, if you are looking through a pair of them the world becomes more colourful,
    nicer as it is ...)

    Tech:

If the source name is CD, the BLb 5 it will try and select SPDIF, and, if a SPDIF signal is
present, the BLb 5 will play this signal.

    !! On all other sources
it will always use the (analogue) Power Link signal.

    Mr 10% post - line 3:

    This
makes sense if the source, eg a BeoCenter 2 DVD needs "looping throgh" for a
Dolby Digital signal to the TV - ?? but in the age of HDMI & BluRay ??

    My personal conclusion:

I prefer to listen to CDs on BLb 5s via SPDIF by quite a margin ... And all other
sources take "the standard path" via ML/PL

And if I will stop playing CDs on my BSd 9000 - the SPDIF of the 5s are waiting
to be connected to the BM5 Smile

PS: somebody recommended in his post a carped for your room - worth to check it out.

    Hi Vienna,

Once again, your answer is perfectly explained, thanks!

    Mr10% did it as well.

So, if I understand, in my current set-up the SPDIF cables are only useful if I decide to connect digitally the BS9000 to the BL5, right?

If I don't, then the music from BS9000 or Apple TV 2 will take the standard path through Powerlink MK2.

Will I feel a big difference with or without SPDIF set-up?

Do you advise me to connect the BS9000 to BL5 with SPDIF or not?

    Let me know please.
