    RL60.2 Refurb Collaboration

    Hey Everybody,

Here at the North Dublin Bang & Olufsen's Enclave And Studio Musuem Center of Appreciation you join myself and Evan. I know Evan as former co-worker and the one thing we only thought we had in common was watches until one day Evan in conversation  says somth'n about B & O and I say to him "come again chap?" and he has this Gator Grin Like You Gotta Be Kidd'n Me neither one of us new anyone in North America let alone at the same job. So guys I'm a novice's novice in all things B & O I feel like I know many of you through Evan's posts. Evan Saved me from a HORRIFIC VENTURE Into the world of Bose!!!! There's More too Tell but you knw Evman140 he's  on me too get this post done so we can bust a move w/ this project.

With the help of my friend Evan, I will soon be listening to my first pair of Bang & Olufsen speakers, a pair of RL60.2s!! How great is that?!

Working on the speakers will be a side by side effort, for the benefit of learning how to refurb my first pair of speakers.

Evan tells me we will be replacing things like capacitors (whatever those may be), fret cloth and doing a repaint on the stands.

I have been wanting to do this project for quite some time now, let's get started!!!

Here we are in the driveway, another BeoWorld First! Testing The Speakers; The ginger says output is a little low in the right speaker, we shall investigate there first!

Welcome to Beoworld, Todd.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're in big, big trouble.  There is no cure for the Beovirus.

Let's start a pool.  I give Todd 4 months before he has a full Beosystem 5500 or similar.

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

I see water in the pic, I've found it absolutely necessary to use Rum and Coke for first time listening, it helps when fuses start blowing and smoke starts showing, and keeps your celebrating shouts at level when everything works out of the box.Drinks

Doing refurb I recommend black coffee and cigaretsCoffee

I've always wanted the stacking system with the master control.  Didn't matter which, in all honesty.  The reason I would bet on the 5500 is that they come up on a certain popular auction site twice as often as the other stackers combined.

The single most common BM you'll see is the 2400.

    Hi Todd,

Be careful with the 5500 system as IIRC that one hasn't the power link connectors used by more recent B&O active speakers.

Otherwise while using passive speakers there's no problem with a 5500 - have one myself.

Power link starts with the 6500 system and of course the 7000 has them, too

P.S. Before I forget to mention - Welcome to BeoWorld Wink

    Beovirus? What's that?

    Re: RL60.2 Refurb Collaboration

I guess I should explain the problem a little bit.

To detail an earlier post, the lower output can be traced to the mid-woofer not performing up at the level it should be.

When listening, the balance is near perfect and the mid-woofer does operate strongly. I think Todd said it best - "The one on the left seems to project more." I think the difference is not that there is more ouput in the good speaker, but more information. I think the problematic speaker, mid-woofer to be more specific, is not producing its full range. What's missing is the top end of the band pass.

Measuring the impedance of the drivers, I found the mid-woofer in question to have a resistance of 8.2 ohms, which is bang on with its manufacturer rating of 8 ohms.

Here is the corssover board out of the unit and the new ones to the right. The supplier also included some candies but didn't include the spec-sheet. Does anyone have this? Stick out tongue

After his first soldering lesson, Todd has just desoldered the original caps here and is removing the 23 year old glue from underneath them.

    Re: RL60.2 Refurb Collaboration

    New VS. old.

    The values for RL60.2 are
    1x 22uF
    1x 10uF
    2x 6.8uF

The little black one is the 10uF and was bought from Radioshack moments before this pic was taken. I mistakenly ordered a set of 15uf caps.

Replacing the caps was the biggest thing we had planned for the day. We put the speakers back together for a listen and the discovery of a noticeable improvement!! However, the mid-woofer problem persists.

So what do you all think? Resistors need to be checked? ..Replaced? Its starting to look that way to me.

    Re: RL60.2 Refurb Collaboration

I will get back into the RLs tomorrow for the resistors and to hot glue the caps. Todd was nice enough to leave them with me so I am going to enjoy them a little bit!

I'm driving them with a fantastic Yamaha Natural Sound CRX-E150 receiver.
