We have been using the component input on our Avant for years. Today the Avant was moved to make room for a new 10-40. My plan was to reconnect the Avant in another room, but to the RF input for cable TV. The Sony TV that was previously connected to Cable TV in that room worked fine so I know the house wiring is OK. I connected the Avant to the Cable TV connection in the wall. When I scan for channels it picks up the channels but the picture is just black and white static through which some images can be seen occasionally.
Any suggestions? Or does it sound like the RF input has gone bad and a repair is needed?

Are you in "RF IN A?"
Also, have you run through the RF SETUP... selecting (I think) CABLE for INPUT A?

Yes, RF in A and run through setup/channel scan.
Also tried RF B.

OK... A should be set to CABLE, B should be set to NONE.
Hmmm... have you removed the legacy external devices (e.g. STB) from the menu?
Have you removed power and tried again after the connection was made?
I can have a play with mine tonight and check how I have it set, should this not be resolved sooner.

A is set to cable, B is set to none, and all external devices are set to none.
I have not tried removing power, will have a try at that.

OK.
I went ahead and had a play, basically starting from scratch to confirm the dialog so far.
If you run the first time setup...
1.) CABLE BOX - NONE
2.) INPUT A - CABLE
3.) INPUT B - NONE
4.) AUTOTUNE
It will take some time for the AUTOTUNE to run. If you are noticing the same problem as stated in your OP -that the pic is B/W & fuzzy at this point, then I would have to think that something is indeed wrong w/ the tuner. You might try running the manual FINE TUNE for each channel, but I would imagine that might take some time!
Short of anyone else being able to offer any advice... You could either go ahead and have it looked at or you could always source another cable box and hook it up as it was originally -bypassing the RF in.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The Sony was an analog tuner. Dealer has suggested I hook up an old VCR with a tuner in it and see if I can get a picture with that.
