Re: TOP 10 designed Bang & Olufsen products ever

I have added the amazing Beocom 4 and  BeoMaster/BeoLab 5000 combo. They do deserve it. In this case we have the TOP13 B&O products ever.

I wish we had a voting option build in the forum but we don't. It would be nice to see different opinions and a list less subjective than mine.

A nice weekend to all of you!

Wow, I havn't come across the 5RG Radiogram before, that's an incredible piece of design.  Even if it was released now it would look pretty good. Sums up why I buy B&O

(Thanks Wasti, it's good when people unexpectedly learn stuff like this)

The 5 RG steel is fascinating. It was actually the basis for a paper of mine in autumn quarter last year. B&O also made a stereo version of this. There are a lot of cues shared between the 5RG and the work of Marcel Breuer (mostly his chair).

Definitely my favorite of the original Peter & Svend designs.

EH!? The Hyperbo 5RG Steel was really more of a design exercise from what I understand - though a very beautiful one. I think maybe only single figures were made at an astronomical cost. Only two are known to exist in any shape and the one in the Struer museum is a remanufactured one. It appears in the B&O book Sound and Vision and Spark to Icon though in the book it has round black bakelite knobs. Thse have been changed to the original style square chrome buttons I seem to remember. (I thought I had taken some pictures but cannot find them!)

A stereo version would be most unlikely as there were no stereo sources! Beomuse did do an article on a 'later model' witha CD player and stereo but I believe this was probably released on the first of April!

Until recently, the sound from the Hyperbo 5RG Steel was provided by a small Sony Walkman in the draw on the left!!

Yes the stereo version I recall was for CDs, although I don't remember where I read abut it. I do believe there were stated production numbers for this version.

Fake I am afraid! Fooled me first time as well! Laughing It would be a jolly good idea though!

I can do a poll if required. Let me know which products you want on and I can do it.

Re: TOP 10 designed Bang & Olufsen products ever

    Hi Peter,

Great to hear that this is possible! I wish we had all products available and not a limited list of for instance 20 positions we could vote on. This limitation to 20 makes the poll already less objective. Furthermore if we would like to choose the TOP10 best designed products and have a good ranking one should have the chance to grant points. For instance 10 points for the best product of my choice, 9 points for the second etc.

Well, maybe someone has another thoughts how we can do this?...

On that basis we could make a top 10 (worst B&O) product list…It would be challenging also…..

Sorry DrDimitris didn't see your suggestion until after I started a new thread called 10 Worst....

but one thing I noted was Beocom 1600 was in, yet beocom 2 is out?

Probaby because the Beocom 2 is total pants to use with the worst ring tone in history John. Not really good design IMO as it doesn't fulfil the criteria to qualify it as such - beautiful I agree but pretty well 2nd rate as a telephone.

And personally I like the Beocom 1600 series design more! (which is why I have one, although I have absolutely no use for it.)

My additions to the top list:

    • Beolit 707 - great form, great sound
    • Rondstraler (seems to be totally function before form - but still beautiful!)
    • Beovision 900/901 with trumpet stand
    • VX5000 - especially in white the most beautiful VHS deck ever built by anyone, and a technical wonder.

    Hi,

What a great thread to start :-)

So in design, i'm taking you mean the physical characteristics of the product and not the functional design parts.

I think you've put a great list together, and my choices would be (in no particular order):

    1.  A8 Earphones

    2.  Beolab 9

    3.  BeoLab 3500

    4.  BeoCom 2

    5.  BeoCentre 2

    6.  BeoCentre 6 / BeoVision 6

    7.  BeoVision 8

    8.  BeoLit 600

    9.  BeoCentre 9500

    10. BeoSound 1

So in design, i'm taking you mean the physical characteristics of the product and not the functional design parts.

This is the reason I dismissed the Beocom 2 because in my mind design is a combination of form AND function. If these 2 criteria aren't applied and aesthetics is the overriding factor then surely it comes under the heading of art which is a totally different kettle of fish....

As a thing of beauty the Beocom 2 is right up there in my top 10 but it would also figure highly in my top 10 of B&O's worst designs.

    Chris.

Oh gosh, my ALL TIME FAVOURITE B&O has got to be the BeoLab 6000 speakers so elegant, timeless and clear sounding.

    ALSO...

    BeoSound Ouverture / 2500

    Beosystem 5000 from 1984

BeoVision 8 for its more real price and daring design

    My BeoSound Century

My Grandad's BeoMaster 1500 and BeoGram 1500 from 1979 as that is what got me in B&O

    AND... maybe CX50 speakers

Oh dear, these are old B&O styles is that saying that maybe the new B&O range doesn'tdo it for me?

I think the worst is BeoLab 5 what an ugly thing that is  totally disgusting!

that's because it comes from a pre-software era

similarly I love my coasters !

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

    Hi,

Definately the BS2500 and BL2500 with its magical sliding doors !

I fell in love with that true piece of design in 1994 at a Brookstone Store in Fashion Valley, San Diego CA. That made me a fan of B&0. This is why my first ever start with a B&O HIFI system was a BS Ouverture + BL8000 Big Smile:

    Then the BL8000, BC6000, BS9000, BC9300 and..A8 are incredibly beautiful.

I must admit to having a soft spot for the BL5 - they are science and engineering on display as part of the design, rather than being hidden away in a box or behind a cover. They are beautiful in the same way that some bridges are beautifulEmbarrassed
