    Failure of Beo5 Docking Stations

Recently, I have had several e-mail's from members who have had problems getting their Beo5 to connect to their PC and/or will not charge on the charger. In December I found myself with the same problem and this posting is to provide members with full details and a resolution.

    Detailed Problem Statements

    The following problems can occur:-

    1. With the docking station connected to the standard B&O charger, it does not charge or charges intermittently.
    2. With the docking station connected to a PC USB port and the Beo5 placed on the docking station, it is not seen by a known correctly configured PC. This connection may work intermittently.

The problem is most likely to happen to dealers and members who regularly unplug the charger and plug in the mini USB to USB cable. Others are unlikely to see this issue.

    Cause

The problem is caused by broken wires in the mini USB socket at the end of the cable of the docking station. As you will see from the picture below the wires break with the solder joints remaining uneffected and not dry joints. The actual wires break just before the solder joint. It happens because the cable clamp does not really clamp the cable enough and if the cable turns more than 1 to 2 mm, one or more wires will break.

Over the connections is resin glue which is not completely holding the parts in place.

    Solution

After resoldering the wires back on the very small circuit board, I used some "plastic glue" around the cable clamp to stop the cable turning within the clamp and hopefully stopping the problem occuring again

    Regards Keith....
